Structural engineer
Structural engineers are responsible for making sure that buildings and structures are safe and designed correctly. Think about buildings like your local football or concert stadium, motorway bridges and tower blocks. Structural engineers work out the effect of high winds, earthquakes, and traffic, they look at how the building is constructed and calculate how to make it and what to build it from. When a building fails, perhaps in an earthquake the structural engineer will work out why so it does not happen again. Being good at Maths is useful, to carry out the calculations and analyse data, and Physics qualifications can be put to good use in this role. You may need to be curious and methodical to work through designs and technical plans. IT skills and English qualifications are useful to support communicating information and working with teams. Structural engineers can earn £22,000 to £50,000 per year.
