Senior Structural Engineer at Morph Structures
Being an engineer is incredibly rewarding and fulfilling!
About Eleana...
Who am I?
"The personality types hit some truths about me - I am organised and methodical for example. However they are not necessarily representative of my profession entirely! Engineers are typically analytical and methodical but some are more detail-oriented than others, some have more computational aptitudes than others and some are better as project managers and communicators. Engineering is vast and different personalities tend to find their niche accordingly. Generally, engineers are good at maths and physics, however some engineers have stronger communication, drawing or writing skills! Engineers are ultimately creative, lateral thinkers who like to solve problems! "
What do I do?
"I design building structures, making sure that buildings can stand up and withstand the stresses that nature and people will put on them! Our outcomes are tangible, as you get a building in the end. I love to see my work become tangible reality, it makes me very proud of my work! Starting salaries are at roughly £23-25k a year. "
How did I get here?
"I wanted to be an engineer since I was young, as there were many engineers and architects in my family and I had a lot of exposure to the profession. I felt it suited my personality and skillset. I went to university to study Civil Engineering and took a placement year mid-degree to work with a company of structural engineers and realised I really liked the specialty. I joined that company upon graduation, and I've worked for a few different companies along the way, gaining different types of experience. "
The life I live
"I trained as a dancer when I was younger so I still try to take classes when I can! I also do martial arts, sing in a choir and generally try to keep myself busy with all sorts of different types of activities. "
My typical day
"A lot of the work that designers do is office-based and can be done with pen and paper and a computer. Some of my day as a Senior Engineer is answering emails to clients, colleagues, other designers like architects or mechanical engineers discussing issues with our projects. I will chat with my team leader about our projects and often sit down and do some design work (look at drawings, solve problems, do calculations). I will also have to brief my junior engineer about what he has to do that day so there's definitely some management skills involved! "
My qualifications
"My path is not traditional as I wasn't raised in the UK and didn't have A-levels. I did the Greek equivalent of A-levels, and then did a foundation course at City University before starting my degree there. I got a Civil Engineering MEng degree and recently also got my Chartership, which is a qualification you get as a practicing engineer a few years after you've been working and you've had some experience.
