About Natasha...

Who am I?

"As a Senior Structural Engineer, Natasha works with teams of architects and engineers, persuading them to work to her structural designs. She is out-going and helpful and her ‘Coach’ type fits this role as she works with a wide range of people to make projects a reality. Natasha is also an ‘Innovator’ type – she is self-motivated and self-reliant and focuses on getting the job done. The ‘Trainer’ side of her personality is evident in the way she works with others, maintaining good relationships, and supporting them to achieve the best outcomes."

What do I do?

"As a Senior Structural Engineer, Natasha looks at buildings that are in various stages of design and development and works out how they are going to be made. She looks at all the structural elements that make up a building and she works out what materials to use to make them safe and cost effective, and to make sure they will work as the architects envisaged and the client needs. Her company works on exciting projects all over the world, from the London Olympic Stadium to Beijing’s new Daxing International Airport. Natasha says it is a great feeling to walk around her finished projects and see her designs become reality.Natasha loves doing the calculations, analysis models, and sketching, and she balances this with writing e-mails and attending meetings. "

How did I get here?

"Natasha’s parents have inspired her by telling her that the one thing people cannot take away from you is your education – so true!Natasha studied for her degree and did work placements to build up her skills and find out about the industry. She paid for her degree but received sponsorship to continue to her Doctorate in Architectural and Civil Engineering. She was not intending to do a doctorate but found the funding provided a steady income during the financial crisis, and it gave her a voice and self-motivation to progress. Natasha started as a Research Engineer with BuroHappold before moving to Structural Engineer and then to her present role of Senior Structural Engineer. The starting salary for a Structural Engineer is about £35,000 and a Senior Structural Engineer can earn up to £55,000."

The life I live

"Natasha likes running, and she enjoys seeking out fun arts and culture activities in her area. She also likes cooking and eating good food, as well as reading, especially around engineering topics.Natasha says she can see herself still being happy in her job in the future. She feels that being female is not limiting in anyway, but she does want to build her experience and skills so that she can achieve everything she would like to."

My typical day

"She has very varied days – she could be visiting an old WWII hangar to survey the condition of the concrete, or building a 3D model of a steel frame to help work out what size beams and columns are needed to support the weight of the people. She works with teams of engineers and architects and says they are all like-minded, fun people to work with."
