About Ann...
Who am I?
"I am a Coach, Coordinator, and Manager - all super useful personality types for working in Project Management!Coach - Being able to listen to people and understand their needs is one of the most important skills for Project Management. You usually deal with a huge range of different people in this type of role, and being able to problem solve in a way that makes everyone's lives easier is crucial. Being trustworthy is also hugely important, as it creates the buy-in for people to listen to you and deliver together.Coordinator - Again, Project Management for me all comes down to being able to pull people together and deliver a shared goal. I think its important to also visibly pull your weight in a team - actions and results speak louder than words. Organisation is also key - and you're probably better at it than you think!Manager - Really seeing a theme here on people skills and I do think they're the foundation for the best Project Managers. You can learn the technical skills that apply to a specific industry on a case-by-case basis, but understanding how to motivate people, encourage discussion, and be adaptable are transferable into any role. "
What do I do?
"I currently work at Rolls-Royce's Bristol site in the LiftSystem UK programme team. I support our project leads in reporting, analysis, and risk management across our major contracts, as well as leading on some engineering improvement workstreams with the manufacturing engineers in the factory. This means that my day-to-day varies a lot, as I might go from leading a risk review, to negotiating with a supplier, to running financial and progress analysis, sometimes all in the same day! My role is a great combination of being data-driven and people-focused, so you get a lot of exposure to different elements of the business and stages of a project lifecycle. The current starting salary for graduate schemes at Rolls-Royce is £28,500, which increases in line with your experience and performance."
How did I get here?
"I first worked for Rolls-Royce on a 10-week summer internship, before joining full-time as a Project Management graduate after university. While at university, I did some consultancy work, and while I loved the people aspect, I wanted to go into an industry with tangible products and have the opportunity to be involved in projects at all stages. The graduate scheme gave me exposure to loads of different projects, including working on implementing new manufacturing approvals processes, supporting the Trent series of Civil Large Engines, and working on the construction of the newly opened Test Bed 80 in Derby, which is the world's largest indoor aerospace test bed. This is one of the best things about working for a large company like Rolls-Royce - there is a huge amount of different teams to go and work in, and its an environment that really encourages that."
The life I live
"I love all sorts of live music - I play flute and gig when possible! Bristol has an incredible live music scene and loads of brilliant indie venues so I get to discover new artists and music all the time! I also do yoga at least twice a week to make sure I look after my mental and physical health."
My typical day
"My work is majority desk-based, although I do try and get over to the factory when possible to interact with our people and processes in manufacturing. Typically I spend about a third of my time in meetings, supporting or running reviews, or otherwise catching up with my team on progress and next steps. The rest of my time is running and analysing reports on our performance against our plan, reviewing change request documents, scheduling, managing budget, and carrying out process improvement activities to make our whole team's jobs easier! We have a lot of strict contractual requirements, so making sure that the work we do and the data we produce is top quality is the driving force behind all my work."
My qualifications
"AS levels: Further Maths (B), French (B)A levels: Maths (A), History (A), Music (A), Chemistry (C)University of York: History BA(Hons)Association of Project Management: Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ)"
