About Karen...
Who am I?
"Thankfully the quiz revealed that I have the right personality to be a developer which is a relief as that is the job I am currently doing! Throughout my career, I've always been the go-to person for help with Powerpoint decks and other tasks. I've managed groups and co-ordinated projects, so I wasn't surprised when the quiz results reflected my leadership and organization skills. Being a teacher for years also honed my problem-solving abilities and taught me to be flexible, as no two days with students are ever the same!"
What do I do?
"Starting salaries for my role begin at £35,000. I love my job as I get to bring people's visions to life! I also get to work with some incredibly talented people and am always learning something new!"
How did I get here?
"After completing my business degree, I took on an IT industrial placement and worked as an IT trainer for the South and East Belfast Trust. I absolutely loved the role, which inspired me to pursue a postgraduate certificate in teaching. I then landed a job as a Business and IT teacher at my old school, a role I enjoyed for a while. However, I eventually felt I was stagnating and needed a new challenge. I took a career break and worked as an IT trainer for a Digital Marketing Call Tracking company in London, where I dived into the world of Google. When I returned home, I had no idea how valuable my experience during the career break would be. Just months later, the Covid pandemic hit, and I was asked to lead what became known as the Covid Online Learning Team. In this role, I trained teachers, students, and even parents on how to use Google Classroom effectively. After the pandemic, I went back to the classroom for a short time but realized I still craved something new. I applied to Pfizer and am now working as an E-Learning Developer, combining my passion for teaching, technology, and continuous learning"
The life I live
"In my spare time, I love walking my little Westie dog, Toby. I'm a bit of a foodie and enjoy exploring new flavours and cuisines. I also like to stay active by swimming (especially in the sea) and going to the gym. Beyond that, I'm really into aromacology and all things holistic, which help me relax and recharge. I'm also proud to be one of the co-founders of Northern Ireland's largest educational professional network, NITC."
My typical day
"A typical day for me as an E-Learning Developer involves a mix of tasks and collaboration. I start my day by checking and responding to emails, including helpdesk or contact inquiries from learners who are having trouble completing a course. Mornings are usually spent on focused work, like editing e-learning videos or Storyline files, tasks that require concentration and minimal interruptions. In the afternoon, when my American colleagues come online, I attend various meetings. These can range from scoping calls to learn more about a project before it starts, to kick-off meetings where timelines and expectations are set, and working groups where we collaborate to find solutions. Each day is different, and I enjoy the variety of developing different assets and working with a diverse team."
My qualifications
"I have three A-Levels and a BA (Hons) 2:1 degree in Business & HRM, along with a PGCE in Business Education. Additionally, I hold several professional qualifications, including being a Microsoft Office Specialist and a Google Certified Educator."
