About Sarah...

Who am I?

"My personality types are Coordinator, Manager and Quality Coordinator all of these fit really well within my current job as Engineering Manager at Wood. Wood is an EPC contractor, EPC stands for Engineering, procurement and construction. My main function is to oversee the engineering group ensuring that work is delivered to a high quality, on time and to budget. The role requires excellent communication within my team and to the client, requires organisation and planning skills and good time management.I am good at working within a team but also leading and I like to hear people's ideas and then help them to develop them further, I am driven to meet deadlines but also adaptable if circumstances change. I am a compassionate \"people person\" and feel it is important to get to know my team members and create a sense of trust within the team."

What do I do?

"I am Engineering manager for WOOD on a contract for Centrica Energy Storage (CES), I am part of a team that delivers engineering solutions to the client and I am based in the client offices. I lead a team of approximately 30 engineers of different disciplines to deliver projects for both on shore and off shore sites. The designs and studies we produce are for modifications and improvements to the sites such as new equipment installation, energy efficiency improvements or transition projects for green energy. I really enjoy the people aspect of my role and ensuring that the people in my team have everything they need to do their job well, I also enjoy the client interaction and the challenge of bringing new ideas and innovations to the table and seeing the project through from concept to construction. The starting salary for this type of role depending on experience is in the region of £75,000 per annum plus other benefits."

How did I get here?

"I graduated from the University of Northumbria in Newcastle in 2000 with a BEng (Honours) in Manufacturing Systems Engineering, I started my Career with Conoco at the Humber Refinery as a Graduate Mechanical Engineer. I stayed at the Refinery until 2007 doing a number of different roles - Rotating Equipment Engineer, Reliability Engineer and Calciners Area Maintenance Leader where I was in charge of all of the maintenance activities on the calciner unit leading a team of multi discipline technicians and contractors. I became a Chartered Mechnical Engineer with the IMechE 5 years after graduated and now mentor graduates to help them work towards Chartership.. I was then offered a job in New Zealand working for Ballance-Agri Nutrients, a company that processes natural gas into fertiliser. I carried out a mechanical engineering role and then the lead inspection engineer role as I became more interested in asset integrity. I am very grateful that my experience and career allowed me to travel and work in such an amazing country!I returned to the UK in 2013 and started work for On-line design as a project engineer, leading projects for BOC, I then returned to the Humber Refinery, now known as Phillips 66 and joined the project team specifying and purchasing replacement equipment such as heat exchangers, towers and vessels. I then transitioned into a project manager role and lead a very large project to replace 2 coke drums and associated equipment. Over the course of this 5 year project there were circa 300 people working on the project and it included one of the largest cranes in the world! After the completion of that project I moved into the role of Mechanical Engineering Superintendent leading the Refineries team of mechanical engineers a job that I enjoyed very much as I had a fantastic team. I have now taken up a new challenge at WOOD where I have been for the past year.I have met many people who inspire me over the years, my first boss who is the most motivated and resilient person I have met in the workforce and always did the right thing and taught me to speak out for what I believe in. The other is one of my engineering team at the Refinery, one of only 2 other females with the team of 25 that taught me to challenge the norm and stand up for the minority."

The life I live

"I have 2 daughters aged 12 and 14 so a large amount of my spare time is spent with them and our dogs! I enjoy running and am part of Barton and District athletics club, I enter local races - mostly 10 mile and half marathon distance. I used to ride motorbikes both on and off road before the kids came along and have also sky dived, been zorbing and black and white water rafted. I love travelling and am fortunate that over the years my career has taken me to New Zealand, Japan, America, Spain, Italy and India."

My typical day

"I work from home 2 days a week and 3 days in the office or on site. The majority of my time is spent communicating either in meetings or on TEAMS calls or by email. I have 1-2-1 discussions with my lead engineers, meetings with other managers and client meetings. I typically work between 40 to 45 hours per week. My role includes reviewing and approving documents, putting together proposals and estimates for work scopes, recruiting new engineers, preparing for and attending STEM events and reviewing project budgets and schedules."
