About Shrina...

Who am I?

"All 3 areas are strongly connected to the work I do. My current role requires a lot of independent working, but also collaboration with the rest of the team to communicate my findings and discuss scientific issues which links to the influencer personality type. The ‘explorer’ trait is rooted into my personality as a scientist - being practical, curious, problem solving amongst other characteristics. Quality controller is an important part of my job too, paying attention to the details, being ethical and challenging ways things have always been done to find a better, more effective way. I find that the personality types change based on my responsibilities and has shown me how much I've grown in other areas."

What do I do?

"I am an analytical scientist working in the research and development sector (R&D) in the pharmaceutical industry. I am developing a method for testing certain components/impurities that could be potentially identified in pharmaceutical formulations. I plan experiments based on research, prior knowledge of samples and conduct the experiments accordingly. I run the method and analyse the results obtained and inform the team of my results/progress and I lend my expertise to other departments. What I enjoy most about my job is that I’m always discovering something new and constantly expanding my knowledge. "

How did I get here?

"Fun fact: I never thought I’d do a degree in science let alone have a career in the scientific industry. My chosen path at A levels was to go into finance and investment banking, after falling short a few marks of the grades I needed, I decided to an undergraduate degree in chemistry (with the intent to still go into finance after completing my degree). During my degree I did a placement year at a chemical company in Germany. It was here I discovered a love for scientific research and was strongly encouraged by my supervisor to pursue a PhD or at least a Master’s degree. My final year of undergrad consisted of a research project and dissertation which cemented my fondness for research and inspired me to do a PhD. I went onto to pursue multidisciplinary MSc and PhD degrees. After completing my PhD, I had planned to travel for a few months, however this was dampened by Covid-19 restrictions. I decided to use my skills to get involved with the NHS vaccination effort for 6 months whilst looking my desired job, which I am happy to say is now my current job."

The life I live

"I enjoy travelling, dancing, and exploring new foods!"

My typical day

"No day is the same for me, I do a have tasks that I carry out on a given day. -\tPlanning and running experiments-\tAnalysing results-\tResearching literature and exploring deeper understanding of the scientific findings-\tCollaborating with the team-\tGeneral admin, such as emails and follow ups with colleagues-\tKeeping update to date with relevant trainingThe goal of my project is to obtain a representative value of certain impurities in a drug product, which is then used for establishing safety aspects of the product. "

My qualifications

"A levels in Biology, Chemistry & MathsBSc (Hons) Medicinal Chemistry (Undergraduate degree)Masters in Analytical Chemistry (Postgraduate degree)PhD in Analytical Chemistry (Doctorate)"
