About Ruth...

Who am I?

"Hello, I'm Ruth "

What do I do?

"My role within Northumbrian Water involves managing supplier relationships and leading our energy efficiency programme to support our routemap to net zero as an Energy Efficiency Programme Lead. The outcomes are very rewarding, protecting our environment, securing new contracts, enabling and realising cost savings and strengthening business relationships. I enjoy the variety of my role, no two days are the same and this allows me to gain knowledge within and outside the utility space and develop new skills. As part of my job, I also get to help organise a festival! It's a real mix of different activities and I love it. The starting salary of my role is within the region of £45-65k depending on experience. "

How did I get here?

"I studied Geography at university and completed a prospects quiz before I graduated to give me some inspiration as to what to do next...I started my career after university within Northumbrian Water as a Water Efficiency Analyst. This role taught me all about customer engagement, reducing water consumption and a variety of different communication skills. In 2020, I was successful in securing a secondment role within the HR space, a challenging time for all due to the Covid-19 pandemic but an insightful 12 months seeing the business from a People function perspective. It's always good to envision your career journey as a path not a ladder. Sideways stepping opens up the opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people, it can be just as rewarding as taking a promotion. After a short time back within the water efficiency team, I applied for the job that I am doing now. I wanted to challenge myself in a new place within the business and this role has allowed me to do that. "

The life I live

"I love spending time with my husband and our dog, Sydney. Syd makes sure we get out and about, we love the countryside, having a dog definitely keeps our family on our toes, most days! I also enjoy listening to music, arts & crafts such as stained glass making, crochet and reading."

My typical day

"I work from home most days and spend a lot of my time on the computer, having calls with my manager or colleagues about a number of different projects or tenders (choosing who will be the best for the job). I tend to answer my emails at the start and end of the day to keep my work time focused on my most urgent and important tasks. When I go into the office, its usually to meet with the wider team and discuss our plans for the next month ahead; to make sure we are all on the same page and to see where we can help one another. My main aims within my role are to reduce energy waste, creating a more efficient organisation and support our sustainability goals. It is important to make sure that we have good relationships with our external partners and key suppliers and finally, to ensure we are complying with rules and regulation. "

My qualifications

"I have 3 A-Levels in Geography, English Literature and Chemistry, I also did an extra AS Level in second year in Geology and also Critical Thinking, I wish I had completed this at A-Level too! I went to University and studied Physical Geography and did a dissertation in heavy metal soil pollution achieving a 2:1. Since I joined Northumbrian Water, I have completed a Level 4 Apprenticeship in Business Operations and a number of Level 2 certificates in things like Team leading, Diversity & Inclusion and Mentoring.
