About Lisa...

Who am I?

"Besides being an Electrical Engineer, I enjoy keeping active, travelling and just being my authentic self. I am a Christian and faith is important to me. I can be very critical and sometimes want things to go perfectly but the beauty of life is that there are up's & downs which we just have to embrace. Lastly, always remember you are never stuck in life."

What do I do?

"Being on a graduate scheme allows me to rotate around different units within the EDF- Renewables. I have now acquired an appreciation of Solar and battery, Construction, importance of our Grid network to ensure a continuous supply of electricity, Project management, Operations and maintenance of wind farms and gained a deeper understanding of electrical engineering. I most enjoy working with people who come from different backgrounds. I love that beside working in the office I get to go on site to see and climb wind turbines. I love that continuous training and self-development is encouraged. Lastly, I enjoy that I can get involved Diversity and Inclusions talks and training within the business. The starting salary is £27,500. "

How did I get here?

"I am Kenyan by birth. Studied most of tentative years in Kenya. My parents funded my university fee and hence my move to the UK to study my bachelor's in electrical and Electronic Engineering and master's in electrical Power Engineering. I was talented in the sciences and math. Thought I would be a paediatric doctor, but God led me to be an Engineer instead.During my time in university, I worked a lot of different jobs for I understood the importance of learning how to build rapport with other people. I love collaborative working and the idea of sharing knowledge! I was a waiter, cook, sales assistant, labourer, cashier and also a friend to many customers who needed a listening ear! My biggest inspiration are my parents. They have provided everything I needed to be where I am today! I owe my success to them! They instilled values of hard work, patience, love and kindness that have opened doors for me."

The life I live

"I love going to the gym. Trying to make a habit of reading. I do like travelling too!"

My typical day

"I spend time liaising with different people involved in the projects I have been assigned to such as contractors & colleagues in different team. I read and review documents that would let's say purchase a new piece of equipment like a transformer. I reply to emails with any inquiries. I also sit and listen to technical calls especially since I am in a learning position. Remember learning never stops!"

My qualifications

"I did the International Baccalaureate Program for 2 years in Nairobi, Kenya. Thereafter, moved to the UK and attended the University of Sunderland to study Electronic and Electrical Engineering. Finally did my master's in electrical Power Engineering at the University of Northumbria. My main challenge as an international student was finding a company that would sponsor my visa to work in the UK especially since the world of engineering is very competitive. Through dedication, practising for interviews and having a strategy, I was enrolled into the EDF-Renewables graduate scheme."
