About Kristine...
Who am I?
"The quiz results have me down as a mixture of influencer, coordinator and manager. All of these are very important in my role. Daily, I work with a large variety of people, and as part of my role involves talking to them about nature conservation and swaying them to come around to its importance. Coordinating is equally important as I run large and small events, host volunteer work days, and work with outside organisations and stakeholders. Equally important is managing, as I am a lone worker and therefore have to manage my time effectively. "
What do I do?
"The main thing I do is to manage and enhance nature habitats with the aim to create the widest biodiversity for numerous species. To meet this aim, I do many different things: keep a budget balanced, manage contractors, write management plans and reports, monitor wildlife, and work with volunteers.I enjoy working with volunteers as their enthusiasm for nature is uplifting and gives me hope. I also love when we have done work to enhance a habitat and it brings in new species - the best way to quantify a job well done."
How did I get here?
"To get to my current role, I was flexible with my path into ecology and conservation. I started out working in wetland creation with Ducks Unlimited in Colorado, USA. I then took a position studying the effects of plastics in the oceans on the successful breeding of Laysan Albatross on Midway Island in the South Pacific, which then led me to a role in Grenoble, France at the Centre of Ortnithologique, which is similar to the RSPB. From there I moved to Moscow, Russia and worked on wetland conservation projects along the Volga River. After moving so many times and working hard, I moved to London to have a six month break, however after a month I saw my current role advertised and was intrigued by the idea of a water company turning their unused land into nature reserves. Here I am 17 years later, and still loving it as much as I did my first day!"
The life I live
"I spend the majority of my time in the great outdoors with my husband and children. I do love some down time with a good book. Before I had a family, I did triathlons for many years. It is a great way to challenge yourself and shows how you are capable of much more than you think. "
My typical day
"My typical day consists of answering emails, designing new habitats, managing and enhancing existing habitats, working with outside organisations, keeping a balanced budget, meetings with colleagues, and managing contractors. Currently, I am working on a watervole reintroduction project on the Hogsmill River and it takes up most of my time as I am collaborating with other stakeholders and organisations. With this project we are aiming to educate the local public about the importance of a healthy river, get them to volunteer and feel ownership of their local nature, and of course maintain a healthy watervole population for years to come."
My qualifications
"I have a Bsc in Ecology and Ornithology with a minor in Chemistry"
