Amanda Beazley
Business Analyst at Network Rail
You don't need to fit a stereotype to have a rewarding career in STEM. You might have a disability so you don't see yourself as 'organised' or 'good at reading/ writing' that's fine. We need to support your needs (e.g. by giving you Reasonable/Workplace Adjustments) so you can contribute fully in a workplace and help us all succeed. Do the job your way at your pace.
About Amanda...
Who am I?
"My personality types on this are Coordinator, Developer and Manager, but it can change as I have a range of interests and skills. I'm at core a problem solver and communicator. You don't have to be the same.A coordinator - I like organising and communicating what people need and team-building and connecting teams. A developer - I am interested in the world around me and how to make it better and solve the big problems by connecting people (a bit like the forest in the film Avatar) and building products. A manager - I'm adaptable, team-oriented, and open minded. However, I don't like that word as I'm a leader not just a manager. Be a leader if you can...support and listen to others, believe in yourself, protect yourself and put on your oxygen mask first, be brave but feel safe first. "
What do I do?
"I aim to implement cultural change and improve peoples' and teams' wellbeing/ways of working/jobs/lives.This often also involves building a product eg a new app or website to help facilitate the change. I listen to the subject matter expert (SME) e.g. I'm working on a disability change initiative at the moment. Then I capture and communicate the problems and change needed in the form of different levels of requirements. Start with a Rich Picture to understand the vision/concept. "
How did I get here?
"I started as an analyst in the automotive industry, before moving into project coordinator roles and then finally working as a software planner in engineering. I now work as a business analyst in the rail industry. I was inspired by both my parents and the work they did with their friends in the 1980s by setting up the local youth club to help young people. I also get inspiration by visiting the National Computing Centre and the historical exhibitions at Bletchley Park and learning what the code breakers did in WWII. I travel, cycle, dance, draw and support charities for people, animals, the environment. I also read books, watch films and listen to music that inspires me e.g. films: The Hobbit, The Lion King, Harry Potter, Avatar, Shrek etcSongs: November Rain by Guns and Roses, Amigos Para Siempre, Into the West by Annie LennoxBooks: The Hobbit, Lost Connections by Johann Hari, An Immense World by Ed Yong, Anne of Green Gables, The Dawn Treader by CS Lewis"
The life I live
"In my spare time I protect my local team by supporting WWF and Essex Wildlife Trust. I also support The British Red Cross (who have the Humanitarian Red Rose). I love to travel and see wildlife and meet people. I've seen bears in Alaska and orangutans in Malaysia, whales by NZ.I also enjoy Spanish flamenco dancing and love UK, Spain, France, Australia, New Zealand and would love to go to Scotland again to and also Africa on safari. "
My typical day
"In a typical day, I will set up meetings with engineers to find out what they need the IT system to do. The meetings could be online and sometimes face-to-face, with people based in the UK or India. I will also talk to our programmers and answer questions. I create process flows and requirements documentation, and will mock up screens of what the IT system might look like. "
