About Billie...
Who am I?
"I think the personality traits from the quiz really resonate with me. Coach: My favorite roles have been where i work cross functionally with a number of different people and departments. I think the best way to work well in corss functional areas is by being a good listener, friendly and compassionate. This helps you build really strong working relationships and helps show people how reliable and trustworthy you can be. Coordinator: Again taking from enjoying working with people, similar traits such as being compassionate and working well with others, being open and honest is a big thing for me, if something impossible is being requested of me, its OK to say \"no\". If you cant physically manage the demand, but knowing how to say no is really important. Figuring out what you need to enable the best possible outcome.Influencer: I find I am fact based in my decision making, this makes it a lot more black and white when there are discrepancies. But listening and appreciating different perspectives is really important to be able to make effective decisions and work well as a team. "
What do I do?
"I moved into new role recently, I am still learning a lot. Learning is part of the career progress and really important to keep fresh mind and to be able to move with the times to progress your career. I really enjoy working cross-functionally. My department are responsible for aligning software updates for vehicles. This is helping keep all the different departments to stick to deadlines and helping chase up problems when they arise. Whats really interesting is the role consists of current issues with cars, but also planning for future vehicles all the way out to 2025! Here at JLR there is such a wide opportunity to try things and move around to roles that might suit you, we also have mentoring internally for all levels! I have found it invaluable through my career so far, so am really excited to be able to reach out here! Starting Salaries for Graduates are around the £32,000 area. for Lead engineers as starting salary is around the £45,000 as stated on glassdoor."
How did I get here?
"It started at school where I studied Maths Physics and Design Technology, I also completed AS Business studies. From there I went to university in Coventry, to study Motor sport engineering. After 2 years, I took a placement year at Cummins in Daventry, where I was a Test Quality engineer. After this year I went back to finish my BEng Degree. Once graduated, I worked with FEV UK, they sent me to Germany for a month to learn some skills from the main site there to bring back to our new UK site. I also worked at JLR with FEV, supporting in the diesel team. From here I took on a brief role at Nissan (NTCE). This was on a graduate scheme, which i struggled to settle into as I had been working a project engineer role at FEV. JLR. This prompted me to look at roles at JLR. I came back into JLR, contracting for myself iniitally. This was in the diesel department, helping develop calibrations for the prototype diesel engines. I did this for almost three years, and then became a permanent employee. Since then I have joined the propulsion software integration team, where I am learning a lot of new things about software and rig testing. "
The life I live
"I love walking and the countryside. I am from Devon, so the move to Coventry and settling down in the midlands has been an adjustment. I also love snowboarding. I regularly take on fitness challenges helping fundraise for charities.I take up a few little hobbies here and there, but definitely no master at them... for example, Roller skating, I try to practice some guitar/ukulele."
My typical day
"Typical day I am desk based. But this is broken up with trips out in cars, or to test chambers to help assess issues.Big picture is to work out issues on vehicles to ensure customers have no problems with their cars. This can be a lot of pressure at times as some issues need resolving quickly. \"firefighting\" is a term often used, something breaks and we have to jump on it to get it fixed. But as I mentioned this is balanced out with future planning of vehicles. Its interesting being part of the propulsion software team as we are helping forge the way into electrification, making sure all the different parts of the cars talk to each other "
