About Rosalind ...
Who am I?
"I love working as a part of a team to solve problems. I definitely prefer to be more organised and approach work in planned manner but the type of work I have also become comfortable reacting to challenges and learning to go with the flow when it's needed."
What do I do?
"I'm a mechanical engineer working to develop marine renewable energy, this includes; tidal, wave and offshore wind energy. I work some of time as a consultant providing my expertise to help other companies with their projects and ideas, and some of the time I work on research and development of my own companies ideas. I enjoy that my work varies - most projects last between 3 and 12 months and then I move on to something new. The type of work I do is innovative and so there are always new challenges. I'm a partner in the company I work for which means I have a say in what we do and in running the company - it's nice to have this kind of freedom. "
How did I get here?
"At school I enjoyed maths and science. I knew I wanted a job that had a clear application in the world. So, without knowing too much about engineering, I decided to do a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Edinburgh University. I didn't always enjoy the course and wasn't sure engineering was for me but in my forth year I did a six month placement working in industry at Pelamis Wave Power. Pelamis were a small, innovative company, building the world's first wave energy converter. The team there were all bright, motivated and inspiring. During the placement I got to help build the wave machine and then to go offshore on one of the first sea trials! I decided this was what I wanted to do. I worked at Pelamis for ten years and then in 2015, co-founded a small marine renewable consultancy called Quoceant, where I work today."
The life I live
"I have two kids aged six and two and work part time so that I can spend extra time with them. I work with my partner, who is also an engineer, this gives us a great flexibility between family and work and we are able to spend lots of time together. Outside of work and family, I love taking photos and growing things in my garden."
My typical day
"I work part-time, Monday - Wednesday. Generally I start work about 9:30am and finish at about 5pm. If things are busy, I'll work in the evening but I try not to do that too often. The work for the day varies depending on the project I'm working on at that time. At the moment I'm working on a design project to develop an under water connection system to quickly and safely connect and disconnect moorings and electrical cables to marine renewable devices. It's a bit like a big, strong underwater plug. I work with a team of around ten engineers including some from other companies. The work I do is mainly on a computer at this stage but later elements will include testing components. My work includes using specialist computer software to model the how systems move when at sea this allows me to understand the size of forces and motions and inform the design process. I also help plan out marine operations this includes 'storyboarding' or drawing out each step (a little like a cartoon strip). There is also a fair bit of report writing and co-ordinating work. "
