About Beckie...

Who am I?

"I was pleased to see my personality type matches were very accurate! Coordinator - I am organised because I have to be but because I like to be too especially with a busy household on top. My role is challenging so I need to be able to pull people together but I will also be the first to offer others help when they are struggling. I provide a consultancy service in projects so need to be able to understand my clients needs whilst importantly getting the desired outcome on time and to the agreed budget. Influencer - I find myself to be an influencer in many contexts of my work. As a Regional Lead I influence my Team Leaders to work with their teams to achieve the business requirements to meet and exceed targets. I influence the projects I work in to be able to problem solve and help clients understand their available options and I influence the workplace and industry by challenging the status quo around wellbeing, mental health and Diversity and Inclusion. Trainer - My favourite thing in the world is mentoring others to achieve their goals, whether that’s family, friends or colleagues. To be able to do this I am a very good listener to understand what drivers might be and am able to offer options and solutions. I also love designing and delivering training too! "

I am a Wellbeing Champion, Mental Health first aider and Diversity and Inclusion rep to make sure we can be the best business possible and treat its people right! I like to do my bit back in the industry too so am also the Vice Chair for ITS UK- Women in ITS sharing best practices, getting great minds together and trying to solve issues that women face in the workplace. "

How did I get here?

"I have worked for as long as I can remember from multiple paper rounds at the age of 12/13 to waitressing at a Rugby club and Masonic Hall, checkout girl and weekend store manager at the local CO-OP and Customer Services at Worcester Bosch Boilers. All before I turned 19. After college I joined Highways England as a Regional Control Centre Operator in the West Midlands on a 24/7 shift pattern, answering SOS calls, sending out Traffic Officers, arranging recovery for those who broke down or were involved in an accident and set signs and signals to warn people if they were causing an obstruction. I found this job fascinating and worked my way up to Team Manager. After 6 years I applied for a procedures role so became an Assistant Procedures Manager to then write the rules for the whole country for how all the control room and on-road staff would operate. I carried out a huge change programme in this role where we reviewed and rewrote 600 documents and got them down to just 35 with some overarching rules to apply to make the rules a lot easier to read, understand and apply. I became the manager of this team too during this time before taking the plunge and applying for a role at WSP in 2018 as a Principal Consultant. I am now an Associate and Regional Lead so I manage people too.I have been inspired by a lot of people along the way, whether it’s been managers I have had, mentors, colleagues, family members and key note speakers at events. You can always learn from people around you whether it’s aspiring to have their level of knowledge, attitudes and behaviours, confidence or opportunities. I have never been afraid to ask for help and have been curious to learn how people have had an interesting and fulfilling career. "

The life I live

"I have a young daughter, husband to be and a 6 year old Miniature Schnauzer dog, we love taking walks together and in the current lockdown find lots of ways to stay entertained at home including Saturday night discos, playing and a lot of crafts! For me I stay grounded with exercise, mainly running, Hit workouts or yoga, meditation, baking/cooking especially decorating cakes with fondant characters and sewing presents such as nursery felt garlands and Christmas stockings/advent calendars. "

My typical day

"Since the lockdown my days are very different to what they used to be froma 60 minute commute and trip into the office.I will drop my daughter at nursery by 8am, walk the dog with my other half, grab a coffee and walk upstairs to my landing where I have a desk and computer chair tucked away by the window. I will log on to my laptop and start to check my calendar for Teams Meetings and read through emails of what has occurred the latter part of the week (I work 3 days at the moment). My day is a mix of calls with my Team Leaders to see how they are and if they have any issues that need raising in their own teams, I check the performance of the business unit from the previous week and set to complete any outstanding tasks. I will carve out time through the day to complete project work which is about 70% of my working week. I currently work on projects as a work stream lead for designing how teams will be set up and trained for when motorway technology needs fixing (so the signs and signals and cameras etc you see that spot and inform you of any disruptions on England’s Motorways). I am also a communications manager for setting future strategies for how this type of technology will be used in the future. My main client is Highways England which is handy as I used to work there too so have lots of contacts! I think it’s really important that you take a break too so I make sure that’s in my diary and I also use what we call ‘My Hour’ on a Monday and Wednesday when you can choose to take an hour off at some point in the day to do something you want to (such as go for a run or dog walk!) and you just make up the time at another point in the week. I love the flexibility it gives me and being able to get some sunshine in the dark winter months! "

My qualifications

"After my GCSEs I went to 6th form college but regretted my AS course choice quite quickly (History, English Literature, Media Studies and Art and Design: Textiles). What is important to note is that’s not the end of the world as I changed them and took the ones I enjoyed instead and did much better by the time I got to A-Level. I also decided not to go to university as the debt didn’t appeal to me, so I set straight to finding a job that suited me, my interests and skills. I did however go back through some distance learning with the Open University whilst working and achieved an Open Diploma. Whilst working at Highways England I took a lot of workplace courses though which have been the most beneficial to where I am today and these include: PRINCE2 Project Management Management of Risk Managing SuccessfulProgrammes IOSH - Managing Safely NEBOSH - General Certificate Agile Lean Roads Academy Post Graduate Certificate Leadership, Management and Change (Coventry University) "
