About Rebecca...
Who am I?
"My personality types are; coordinator, quality controller and trainer. I think these are a realistic summary of my personality types. As the coordinator has good communication skills and this is key in my role as effectively communicating with different groups of people is crucial. The main aspects of the quality controller type that I picked out are \"good with detail\" and \"good at managing risk\". In the nuclear industry the management of risk is significant in all projects and environmental risk management falls within that. Good with detail is also important as I regularly have to handle significant volumes of data and being able to abstract what's relevant is a useful skill. The trainer has important values that I think relate to any role. Being organised, efficient and a good listener is crucial in any job and nailing these skills can always add value to a role! "
What do I do?
"I am on the nucleargraduates graduate scheme as an Environmental Engineer which involves a sponsor company (Magnox for me) funding my professional development over 2 years, where I work in 3 different placements within the nuclear energy industry before returning to Magnox as a full time employee. I enjoy my role a lot and it is particularly fulfilling because I get to be involved in lots of different areas. As an environmental engineer I work in all aspects of project delivery from waste and demolition through to wildlife protection. I also find it really engaging that a range of skills are required and developed such as technical knowledge surrounding radiological protection and water chemistry through to softer skills such as effective communication. "
How did I get here?
"I studied Environmental Science as an undergraduate degree. I was definitely unsure about what I wanted to do long term but knew I enjoyed natural sciences and liked David Attenborough! While at university I worked in my summers as an intern for a civil engineering company, this was really useful as it helped me get an understanding of what kind of role I could have post university and helped me see what kind of work I liked and disliked. In my final year balancing graduate scheme applications, dissertation and final exams was a challenge and I gained a role with Biiffa Waste Services Ltd as an environmental control advisor on landfills. This was a great and interesting first environmental focussed role, however after a year I felt the urge to return to study to get a more academic knowledge of environmental management practices. I gained a place at The University of Leeds to study an MSc (eng) in Environmental Engineering and found this a really valuable experience. I really enjoyed this degree and felt the knowledge I gained was directly applicable to industry. Then once again its was exams, dissertation and job application time! I now work for Magnox on the nucleargraduates graduate scheme, this is a graduate programme where I have 3 placements over 2 years within the nuclear energy sector at the end of which I return to a full time role with my sponsor company, which is Magnox for me. "
The life I live
"I love to run and I am training for the 2021 London marathon, I am also a keen rower. Recently I really got into cross stitch ever since the first lockdown. "
My typical day
"Currently I work at a nuclear power plant which is being decommissioned (slowly demolished), my role is to advise how to manage these projects with as little environmental impact as possible.Smaller tasks that I am involved in are providing environmental risk assessments for works being conducted at site. For example, at my site some cabins need to be knocked down and these cabins are near to a newt habitat, so this is an environmental risk that I would advise on. I also do a lot of site walkovers, which involves engineers explaining the key environmental risks in the areas of site that they are responsible for. This is usually very interesting and I see parts of site that I wouldn't go to!A larger project I am involved in is what's called a district survey, which assesses how much radioactivity is found outside the plant. So this involves everything from taking soil samples, to checking cows milk at nearby farms, and it's conducted to make sure the plant doesn't go over its limits. I am also responsible for updating the sites biodiversity action plan, this is a series of actions and processes to make sure that wildlife and ecology on site are encouraged. This is important as nuclear sites once they have been fully decommissioned want to surrender their \"nuclear license\" and become land that can be suitable for public access. If there is a well established wildlife plan already in place this makes the future handing over easier. "
My qualifications
"A Level: Biology, Chemistry, GeographyBSc (hons): Environmental Science Between my degrees I worked for a year as an Environmental Control advisor on landfills. Msc (eng): Environmental Engineering Current role as an Environmental Engineer on the nucleargraduates programme "
