About Marion...
Who am I?
"Commutating and coordinating with people is a core part of civil engineering, you have to be able talk to everyone and make sure that everyone has understand what you have said. You also have to make that everyone is heard and that ideas are shared not ignored. I love being able to talk to people from different work, cultural and social backgrounds and hearing what ideas they have to share. Sometimes, being a civil engineer means breaking down complex works and language so that everyone can understand it. "
What do I do?
"As a graduate site engineer, I spent a lot of my time on construction sites and with trades people like bricklayers, electricians, carpenters and plumbers. I have to talk with these trades people and tell them how we are going build things. I make sure that everything goes in the right place and that everyone is doing things right and in the safest way. My favourite part of my job is seeing how the things I have helped build make people's lives easier or better. Civil Engineers are constantly in demand meaning jobs are not difficult to find and the starting salary is usually around £28,000. "
How did I get here?
"I first thought I wanted to be an Architect - which is someone who draws and designs houses, offices and buildings but I like the idea of being involved with the actual construction of things. My science teacher told me one day about civil engineers and how they design and construct amazing things like bridges, skyscrapers, houses and roads. So I went to university to study civil engineer and I am now working on a \"one of a kind\" railway project which will make it easier for people to travel from London to Edinburgh. "
The life I live
"I love playing with Lego and building different things from spaceships to castles. I also love to sing along to Disney songs (even though I am a terrible singer) and favourite song is 'You're Welcome' from Moana. I also play Badminton at a local club. "
My typical day
"A typical day for me is arriving at work and quickly changing into my orange high visibility clothes to go on to site (this is what we can the area we are building in). When on site, I have a chat with the people I will be working with about what kind of task we are doing to today. I tell them how we are going to do the task and what they need to do to stay safe whiling work on the task. I then mark out where things should go with a fancy computer called a Total Station or GPS (this is called setting out). Once I have finished marking out where things go, the others can start constructing, and I make sure that things are in the right place according to the design instructions (this is called monitoring). We take breaks for tea-time and lunch time and usually have a good blather and strong cuppa. At the end of the day we pack up the site making sure that we having left anything dangerous like a massive hole that someone could fall in."
My qualifications
"Masters of Engineering in Structural Engineering with Architectural Design with Honours of the First Class. Scottish Baccalaureate in Science3 Advanced Highers (including Mathematics, Physics and Graphic Communication)6 Scottish Highers (including Mathematics, Physics, Graphic Communication and Technological Studies)"
