About Caroline ...

Who am I?

"I would say my personality types are pretty accurate.Co-ordinatorAs a Quality Engineer I have to be well organised to keep on top of the variety of different activities I am involved in. I have to work with a lot of people from different departments and suppliers and customers. So I need to work well with others, pull them together and communicate effectively. When you need the support and input of others and work closely with customers as much I do, you also have to be pretty patient.ManagerI enjoy what I do. So I find it easy to motivate myself. I'm not a natural leader though. So I would say motivating others is sometimes harder for me. However, I am quick to adapt to the constant changes that are always happening within businesses. I am open minded and encourage discussion, as I like to try to understand other people's points of view. This is useful for the work I do as sometimes you can learn new things and create a more robust solution to a problem when you get a different perspective. I would say that listening is one of my super powers and very necessary for getting to the bottom of an issue in order to solve it.Quality ControllerOne of the key reasons I went into Quality Engineering is because I have a good eye for detail. I'm also often told that I am the voice that helps others stay right and true. So I'm definitely honest and ethical with a natural sense of justice.I also like to challenge the way things have always been done - this is essential for making changes and improvements, which is what my job is all about."

What do I do?

"The main focus of my job is to solve problems and implement improvements within manufacturing and other business processes. When something goes wrong I work with a team to figure out what happened and how we can prevent it from happening again.Problems can range from product design defects, manufacturing errors, supplied material defects, delivery picking errors, to order entry errors and more. I regularly use data analysis to identify what the biggest problems are. So that we can focus on solving those issues that have the largest impact. It is very satisfying when we find the root cause of a problem and fix it.Starting salary for a Quality Engineer is approximately £20,000."

How did I get here?

"I've always loved finding out how different items work and how they are made. This, as well as a skill and enjoyment for maths and science helped me to choose Engineering as a career.I studied Mathematics, Physics and Design & Technology A levels. Then I went on to study a Manufacturing Engineering and Management degree at University. As part of my degree I completed a year working in industry between my 2nd and 3rd year. I worked as an Industrial Placement Engineer for a company that made optoelectronic products for communication networks. My first Engineering job after finishing my degree was as a Process Planning Engineer for a company that made forged metal parts for aeroplanes.During my time there I discovered the type of work that interested me the most and what I was good at. This led me to apply for my first job as a Quality Engineer at their sister company. I then went on to work for several other companies as a Quality Engineer. These companies made exhaust systems for trucks, car alarms or aeroplane wing structures. I learnt a lot about different problem solving methods, auditing, improvement project work, working with different people, products, processes, suppliers and customers. Then I got this job with Honeywell. This company makes fire alarm devices and control panels for large buildings. Although the products and types of customers are very different from any I came across before, the type of work is the same and still just as satisfying."

The life I live

"I love reading, especially anything with magic, adventure and strong female characters. A great story can be thrilling and inspiring.I've also practiced martial arts since I was 10 years old. Starting with Karate, then going on to learn Wing Chun Kung Fu, Kick Boxing, Brazilian Jujitsu, Jeet Kune Do, Eskrima (stick fighting) and Pencak Silat. As well as being great fun and good exercise, it has provided me with some great self-defence skills and confidence. I enjoy finding any excuse I can to put fancy dress on. I have a great selection of outfits ranging from Wonder Woman to Severus Snape! I like to help people, when I can. So I'm a Friendship Volunteer for the charity Independent Age. Where I call an elderly person once or twice a week to help reduce loneliness. "

My typical day

"My day starts with calculating the quality performance metrics for the previous day, ready to share during the daily morning review meeting with the production team leaders and managers. Top priorities for the day are agreed and assigned to the relevant people.I will then investigate any urgent quality problems that arise, as soon as possible, to ensure production can continue without defects being made and/or customer's issues are fixed.I get plenty of emails every day. So I have to review these frequently and add, those that need some action taking, onto my to-do list and identify their order of importance. I then work down my to do list, which usually has a wide variety of tasks, such as; analysis of customer returns or manufacturing data, updating work instructions, auditing processes, raising problems with suppliers, conducting defect investigations, checking designs of new products and processes being introduced, completing improvement project tasks.I also attend a variety of meetings each week to work with other team members or people from other departments. Sometimes, this includes people who work in other countries, at the company's other sites. Now and then, I get to visit a Supplier or Customer site, in order to check improvement actions taken are effective or to better understand a problem."
