About Amal...
Who am I?
"It matches pretty well, however depending on the situation over time I have learnt to adapt my type or style as needed e.g. you can't lead a team without planning, even if I personally prefer to be spontaneous! Looking back I've always liked leading either in Brownies or Guides, Hockey Captain to even Ball (Large College party for 1000 people) President. I have always been fascinated on how things worked and particularly Airplanes so after."
What do I do?
"Currently I manage a 3 large groups of Scientists working in many different projects from Cancer and Antimicrobial resistance to nanoparticles, batteries and medicines manufacturing. Each day is different helping the teams overcome obstacles, finding a way to support an area to recruitment. I love the variety of people i get to work with across the business from Sales to Marketing and Assets and Safety."
How did I get here?
"My background is Manufacturing Engineering - always stemmed from my love of problem solving and leading people. I started my career as a Process Engineer in-charge of improving the performance of the packing line. I then started Line management responsibilities and then after 4 years was running the whole Packing Department. This meant leading a team of 127, delivering £850 million business each year to customers. I then moved to the Gillette site and became the Site Capability Leader, then in addition ran the Warehouse. I then did multiple roles including Site Initiative & Improvement Director with the last role being Site Quality & Initiatives Director. After 16 years with Procter & Gamble and 2 young sons I decided to leave to join NPL to work on areas that would benefit the UK."
The life I live
"I currently have 2 young sons who keep me busy, we love to travel together, go swimming, cinema and I also love DIY. I love to cycle and have always enjoyed improving my home or garden - i've done tiling, laying patio, A LOT of painting and fixing and redesigning my home. I am also keen on recycling and reusing items - so a fan of websites like Ebay, Olio and FB Marketplace. "
My typical day
"Due to my role I now spend most of my time in meetings, workshops or calls with my team or one of the Site teams or Committees. Overall my career has progressed from delivering projects myself, then my teams to now at Company level. I now need to ensure that NPL meets it obligations but that I also ensure that the scientists are supported to deliver with Excellence. This includes some Site level roles of data protection, Internal Training and Auditing. The best part is helping teams problem solve or helping develop the team I support or others in the business. "
