About Monae...

Who am I?

"I am a Technology Degree Apprentice working at the BT Tower in London. I am a confident and enthusiastic person, which helps me to keep a positive mindset in everything I do! I'm also very social, and enjoy interacting with others both inside and outside of the office. I love learning new skills, so staying organised and being able to communicate well with others allows me to do this! My personality types are Communicator, Coordinator, and Trainer, which I feel all play an important part in my role as an apprentice. "

What do I do?

"As a technology apprentice, we get the opportunity to rotate around different teams at BT Tower every 6 months. Every teams role is completely different and I think this is what makes our scheme so exciting, as you're always learning something new and working with a variety of people! Most recently, I've been working in a team who are responsible for the monitoring of the BT Sport app, and the testing of it's new features which is really cool! Alongside my operational role, I also take part in many different volunteering events such as attending school workshops and careers fairs (to help promote apprenticeships), as well as raising money for different organisations such as Sports Relief. At the end of my apprentice scheme, I will qualify with a full Bachelor's degree in Digital and Technology Solutions, in addition to the 4 years of experience working with BT."

How did I get here?

"I knew that I wanted to jump straight into my career once leaving sixth form, as learning on the job is much more suited to me as opposed to University alone. The BT apprenticeship scheme immediately stood out to me as it offered the opportunity to progress within a huge company, as well as gaining a degree qualification. I come from a non-technical background with no prior experience, having started at BT straight from school, however that hasn't affected my role in the company at all, mostly due to of the amazing support I've received! "

The life I live

"Outside of work, I love socialising with friends and family, mostly going out for drinks or food! I also love travelling and visiting new places. I recently travelled around different cities in Asia which was amazing and a whole new experience! "

My typical day

"Every day can be different at BT Tower for an apprentice! Most days will include the more obvious tasks like replying to emails, attending team meetings/calls and working through a to-do list. However the tasks you carry out will vary day to day, depending on what team you're in for each 6 month rotation! A recent project I was involved in, with the BT Sports app team, involved the testing of the new Watch Together feature (powered by Sceenic), which was a really cool feature introduced as a result of COVID and social distancing restrictions. Some other days in the office will also involve working towards university assignments or taking part in volunteering activities (most taking place online currently)."

My qualifications

"Post-GCSE, I went on to study Business, English and Textiles at A-level (a complete mixture of subjects as I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do after sixth form!) However all of these subjects helped to prepare me for the role I currently play at BT, as they involve creative thinking and taught me how to analyse different ideas, looking at things from different perspectives."
