About Kyriaki-Margarita...

Who am I?

"I find parts of myself when reading the description of my 'personality types'. I am very organised and I have indeed the ability of getting things done. In addition, I enjoy simplifying complex information and I always keep in mind that people think and learn differently. These characteristics have been really useful in my work as a researcher. For example, organisational skills can prove useful as, when doing a PhD, you are responsible for organising your workload. In addition, it is important for researchers to share their knowledge to both the scientific community and non-specialised audience. "

What do I do?

"I am a PhD student on medical image computing. I am coding with the purpose of extracting useful insights from medical images, such as brain MRI. I enjoy the independence of choosing what to work on and when to work, as well as the opportunity to research unexplored areas and learn something new every day. I am currently a student and thus I have a scholarship, not a salary, which is around £17,000 per year."

How did I get here?

"I studied electrical and computer engineering. I had the chance to learn and try many different things throughout the five years of my studies and what I enjoyed most was biomedical engineering. For this reason, I applied to the CDT in medical imaging of King's College London and Imperial College London for a 4-year program. The first year was focused on a MRes in Medical Imaging at King's College London and as of the second year I started as a PhD student in the department of Computing at Imperial College London."

The life I live

"In my spare time, I love doing yoga. It helps me relax and stay strong. I also enjoy travelling, and hanging out with friends. I used to be a ballet dancer and I am now a ballet enthusiast."

My typical day

"I start my day by replying to emails and organising the work of the day. I then start working on my project, which aims at the design of a decision support tool that will aid clinicians in diagnosing neurodegenerative diseases. Apart from coding, I also read other people's research work with the purpose of knowing what else is going on in the field. Moreover, I have meeting with my supervisors as well as with other people in my lab. I also attend seminars and reading groups with the purpose of staying informed and communicating with others."
