About Amy...
Who am I?
"My results for associated roles with my personality traits suit that of 'Coordinator', 'Quality Controller' and 'Trainer'. Indeed, these closely correlate with my job role and personality type (also: INTJ). The qualities of these include personal tendencies for patience, honesty, good listener, understanding; whilst the more professional skills include organisation, risk management, eye for detail and communicator. I consider myself to be an attentive 'helper' who seeks to inspire others and share knowledge to a new generation. I have an analytical and methodical approach to work, I enjoy simplifying and explaining tasks to others, and supporting the colleagues in my business. "
What do I do?
"Environmental consultancy roles typically appraise the impacts of a project, development or plan and look to alter the way these are progressed in order to avoid or minimise negative impacts, and include positive ones where possible. This could involve changing the design of a development by working with engineers, architects and other specialists, to reduce impacts to people, noise, air quality, ecology, water, soils and the landscape. In my current role, working on HS2, I am responsible for working alongside engineers to check over the design and the legal compliance of construction documents. All of this makes sure the development is not harmful to the environment or communities! Salaries for new/graduate consultants is c.£22,000, rising to c.£38-40,000+ for Senior roles, and c.£55,000+ for Principal/Lead level."
How did I get here?
"Following my undergraduate degree, I started a graduate sustainability role, working with University students to start their own funded sustainability campaigns. A year later, I went back to University to do a postgraduate degree, and following graduation with my Masters I started work in a small consultancy getting involved with lots of different varied projects - 'all mucking in together'. I was seconded to a large company as an Environmental Advisor, working on highways developments such as new roads and junction improvements. I later accepted an internal position at the company, and later again promoted to Environmental Coordinator, managing budgets and overseeing the assessments. After 3 years, I took a Senior role at a railway/high speed rail engineering firm, where I currently work mostly on HS2. "
The life I live
"On my weekends, I love to hike, bike, run, climb! Walking long distance is a big passion of mine, and I love mountains and the outdoors. "
My typical day
"With the COVID-19 pandemic, I work currently from home on my computer. My day consists of conference calls, teammate group sessions, and client meetings. I will review (assurance check) documents provided by the environment team, approve items for delivery, coordinate other deliveries, and oversee completion of tasks. In previous roles, my job involved a lot of site visits and surveys - wearing full high-visibility clothing and hardhat! - and I miss going out on construction sites very much. I hope when the pandemic subsides, this will become part of my role again, as I enjoy socialising with contractors and other companies. "
My qualifications
"A Levels: Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Health and Social Care. Undergraduate degree (BSc Hons.): Environmental Science and Physical Geography. Postgraduate degree (MSc): Environmental Assessment and Management. "
