About Joanna...

Who am I?

"I would definitely say that the Coordinator personality type fits myself and my role as a systems engineer. Systems engineering is all about keeping everyone on the same page and ensuring that information is passed around!Developer fits with my mathematical background - I love solving problems and improving things!I would never have given myself the personality type of Manager, however reading the qualities makes me think I am more like a manager than I would think! I am great at working with people and motivating them, and am a very team oriented person!"

What do I do?

"Being a systems engineer is like being the glue that holds everything together. We make sure that the physicists who design products have thought about the role of the production engineers who will be building the product. We ensure that the whole lifecycle of the product is thought about at the design step, right the way through to when the life of the product is up. We look at the big picture! I love getting the chance to see the whole process as well as talking to lots of different people along the way!My starting salary as a graduate systems engineer is £26,500."

How did I get here?

"When I was at school I had no idea what it was that I wanted to do! So instead of choosing a path to a career I chose to carry on with what I enjoyed and I studied Maths at University. I went to the University of York and completed an integrated masters in mathematics. I then began work as a systems engineer in a graduate role on a grad scheme. Grad schemes are great as time is factored into your work time to continue your learning and development. "

The life I live

"Since I was young my main hobby has been dancing. I carried this on in university and during my final year decided to take up cheerleading! I found a club in London when I graduated and managed to continue! Don't let getting older stop you doing your favourite things! "

My typical day

"Being a graduate my time is split, 35% of my time is dedicated to learning and development and 65% of my time is my job. Examples of graduate time include: lectures and presentations about the company, training courses to boost skills and knowledge, volunteering in schools, helping out senior members of staff by organising meetings or recording minutes for meetings.Examples of work I do in my job include: writing requirements for any new work that will be completed, holding meetings with other areas of the business to ensure everyone is on the same page, writing up reports explaining what has been done and why."
