About Emma...
Who am I?
"My three personality types do match! In essence they show that I care about people and aware of the impact of people on projects and vice versa. I believe if you understand what makes a person tick and show them compassion and that you are honest, this will go a long way. You can get the best results in your projects if everyone working on them feels valued and part of a team where there is good communication.I'm also very organised and like things to be done as efficiently as possible, coming up with some out of the box ideas to help make things easier. I love solving puzzles, whether it's developing a new system to help solve a problem, or completing a puzzle in a puzzle book. However, this test shows that no matter what personality traits you have, you can do any job you want to if you put your mind to it!"
What do I do?
"I work as a software developer to help develop and support the internal systems used by my company e.g. purchasing, visitor booking, project management etc. As the business is constantly evolving I ensure that the systems are able to support them when doing their job.The best part of my job is that I am constantly learning about new technologies and I'm never bored. I also love being able to connect with different people around the business and I'm not always stuck behind a desk! The starting salary for a software developer is £22,000."
How did I get here?
"When I was deciding what I wanted to be when I grew up, for years I wanted to be a Maths teacher - because I thought this was the only career you could have is you loved Maths! However, in Sixth Form I realised I really loved IT and the programming element of it, it was a lot like piecing together a puzzle. From here, I applied to university to study Software Engineering and whilst completing my degree I did a placement year at Boots UK's head office. There I was a technical advisor for the IT support team and IT Project Coordinator delivering new IT projects.Once I graduated in 2017 I looked for jobs in Project Management and got a Project Coordinator job at The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) working on engineering projects.Shortly after this, I moved to the Business Systems team at the MTC as I missed getting involved in technical work and programming. Now I get to work with people all over the business improving and supporting a variety of software systems using lots of different technologies and programming languages!"
The life I live
"Music is a big part of my life so I go out to listen to live music whenever I can, or always have my headphones on!I also love crafts and have been working on some cross stitch projects in my spare time for both my home and as presents for friends.I have a big plant collection at home so spend time looking after them and in garden centres for supplies (and new plants!).But most of all, I love spending time with my friends and exploring new places, whether it's visiting a new city or going on holiday somewhere new."
My typical day
"Each day is completely different at work! But that's why I love being a software developer.Part of my job is supporting the current systems we have in the business, so if someone is having problems using the system, I'm there to fix it! I have to identify exactly where the problem is, what's causing it, and find the solution. Sometimes this can be an error in the program and I need to make changes to the code, or looking at external factors like connectivity issues etc.The other side of my job is working on improving the current systems, or creating brand new systems to improve the efficiency of the business. There is always something new to develop because the company's processes are always evolving to make things quicker and easier, especially as the business is growing."
My qualifications
"I have A-Levels in Maths, IT and Physics, with an A-Level in Chemistry.I went on to complete a BSc (Hons) degree in Software Engineering at Nottingham Trent University"
