About Hannah...
Who am I?
"My personality types showed that I match the three C's; campaigner, communicator and coordinator. It's actually surprising how accurately my personality can be narrowed down from just a few simple questions. I use nearly all of these personality traits on a daily basis in my field of work. I have to be good with words, to simplify complex concepts while keeping people awake and interested, understand the way people absorb information, engage a wide variety of audiences, be opinionated but open-minded, hit deadlines (with a high standard of work) and be a little bit knowledgable and passionate about pretty much everything! All of these also require me to be confident, which is my one downfall. I was always extremely shy as a child, but since finding my niche in the world, my confidence has sky-rocketed. It's so important for some aspects of your job to push you out of your comfort zone to develop you as a person. Confidence comes with success and being comfortable with who you are. Overall, I'd say I'm predominantly a communicator but with splashes of campaigner and coordinator thrown in."
What do I do?
"I own my own business, with just one other full-time employee. Running a two-man show means that you have to be a bit of everything. I need to be an entrepreneur, a scientist, an administrator, a social media manager, a customer services rep and a postman. But beyond all of that, I am a writer and editor. My day-to-day work as a writer and editor involves reading and editing submissions, researching new content, fact-checking, sourcing sponsorships and writing articles for web and print. While I absolutely love the work I do, the best part of my job is receiving the printed magazine, which is the result of hundreds of hours of labour, and then getting incredible reactions from our lovely readers. My magazine ends up in shops, schools, clubs and teenagers' homes across the globe and continues to educate and inspire young people, long after it leaves my hands. To me, it's so magical that there are youngsters all around the world who have read what I have written and, even better, that it might influence their path in life. There is no better feeling. "
How did I get here?
"I've had quite an unconventional route to my role, as I am predominantly self-taught. I had so much passion and motivation for science communication that I spent so much time taking online courses, researching, practising and, well, faking it until I made it. While I didn't have any official education for science communication, my educational pathway gave me a great background and a solid starting point to be left to my own devices. I got my A-Levels in Maths, Biology, English Language and Psychology and went on to university to read Forensic and Applied Biology. At this point, I wasn't sure what I wanted to be but knew something science-related was my calling. During my studies. I found I had a real interest in writing for laymen, which was something we had to learn to present evidence in court. From there I realised that this was a skill needed in science communication and found that that was what I wanted to do. Towards the end of my degree, I was studying for my exams, writing essays and my dissertation and building up a portfolio of science writing. After leaving university, I developed the idea for Wonk! and decided there was no point in waiting around and begun learning how to build a business and produce a magazine, whilst refining the skills I needed. From then on I have never regretted the pathway I took, even though I didn't know it was one I wanted to take until midway through my degree. "
The life I live
"I have so many hobbies outside of my job that I have managed to weave them into my work so I have more time to do all the things that I love together. Most recently, I have started to really enjoy sewing. My Grandma gave me her beautiful old Singer sewing machine and I have loved learning how to make my own clothes. It's the most satisfying feeling in the world upcycling old clothes or making completely new ones out of pretty fabrics, and it's even better knowing that they haven't been made by children in a sweatshop!I also love to paint, particularly watercolours, but I really have to be in the mood for it. Another big part of my life is baking. I can't get enough. I actually applied for the Great British Bake Off (twice) and got through to the 2nd stage but never any further. I think it would be so fun, or maybe terrifying, to have my bakes judged by Paul and Prue! Aside from that I also love anything related to DIY; painting walls, wallpapering, making furniture and wallhangings. I enjoy yoga, working out (at home, so I don't have to commit to a gym pass), hiking and games nights with friends. "
My typical day
"My days are extremely varied. Some days I'm mostly replying to a backlog of non-urgent emails that have been sitting in my inbox for too long, some days I'll have loads of free time to get some content research done or visit a company to get some behind the scenes info and other days I'll be so run off my feet that by the time it gets to the end of the day I can't even remember what I've been doing (a.k.a. completely in the zone). But on a typical day, I will get up and make myself a good breakfast, do my skincare routine and have a quick tidy up. I'm lucky enough to work at home, so rather than waking up later, I will use my 'commute' time to take some time for my mental health. Once I start work, I'll have a look at any emails that have come in overnight and reply to the urgent ones and then check the website stats. After that, I have to check for any urgent press releases which will be relevant for our readers and needs publishing ASAP. If there is, I will have to spend time editing the release to make it suitable for my audience, before uploading it onto the blog and doing relevant social posts. After this, I tend to have some time to work on ongoing projects, sponsorships and upcoming issues. During this time I'll also make sure to catch up with our graphic designer to give some pointers and make edits to the issue we're currently working on and give him updates on any social media campaigns coming up. Towards the end of the day, I'll check through my emails and the day's stats again, looking at trending topics and any new science research. I'll then write some notes for the next day so that I can go into my evening with an empty mind and still pick up where I left off the next day."
My qualifications
"I went to my secondary school for A-Levels and took Maths, Biology, English Language and Psychology, achieving 1 A, 2 B's and a C. From there, I went to the University of Worcester to read Forensic and Applied Biology. I graduated from there in 2018 with a First Class BSc and 2 awards. Beyond university, I chose not to study post-grad but took various online courses in my spare time, relating to science communication."
