About Kirsty...

Who am I?

"When I was leading the team at Hull managing and developing people was the most important part of my role. I enjoyed being part of a large team running a petrochemical site in a safe and reliable way. I started my career as a Research Chemist and used my knowledge of chemistry to improve many chemical processes. I travelled the world with BP living in South Korea and the US as well as the UK. I took on many different jobs including roles in chemical plant operations, on-shore and offshore pipeline operations and health and safety.Whenever I managed a team, creating alignment and setting priorities for the team was vital to ensure that we all pulled in the same direction. I enjoyed helping teams to improve all aspects of our operations. I too early retirement from BP in 2016 and now chair the Women into Manufacturing and Engineering team - our aim is to inspire more girls to consider careers in the manufacturing and engineering industries"

What do I do?

"In all the jobs I've done the most enjoyable things were working with people to improve the way we managed the assets - this could be improving the way a catalyst worked, the efficiency of a chemical process, the safety of a system and many more things."

How did I get here?

"I started in the Research and Development Team as a Research Chemist developing a new catalyst to make acetic acid. I then moved to be a Research Technologist where I used my chemistry knowledge to improve the operation of chemical plants. I then moved into plant operations. Firstly as an Operations Engineer - managing the team that operate chemical plants and then an Operations Team Leader.I wanted to learn more about the health and safety aspects of operations leadership so took on the Health and Safety Team Leader role and then moved on to a global role - Planning and Verification Manager.I was keen to return to Operations Management so then moved to an Operations Leader role in the US based in Houston and finally the Petrochemicals Plant Manager role at Hull in the UK"

The life I live

"I'm a keen walker and gardener."

My typical day

"Research Chemist - most of the day was involved in designing and running experiments.Research Technologist - I spent most of my time analysing how the chemical plant was performing and working with others on how to improve its performance."
