About Jennifer...

Who am I?

"My personality types highlight how I enjoy to work. I really enjoying working with other people to solve problems. The added bonus of my job is that I get to do it in the construction industry and work with so many different type of people. I think the best bit of my job is that I get to see examples of it everywhere I go, I just need to look at all the different types of buildings that make up our society."

What do I do?

"I am a electrical building services engineer. This means I work in a team with other building service engineers to design all the systems in a building that make it a comfortable place to be in. This includes the heating, air conditioning, ventilation and drainage systems. I work specifically on the electrical systems, so all the lighting, fire alarm systems and getting your electricity into your building. My role is as a design engineer and the best analogy I've heard for explaining this is to imagine a building - such as a school - as a piece of flat-pack furniture from Ikea. We, as design engineers, write the instruction manual that tells you how to put it all together so that the contractors or builders on site are able to correctly assemble it. "

How did I get here?

"I have always love buildings and architecture. From a young age it has always been something that really interested me and so I knew I wanted to work with them when I was older. However as I went through school I found I tended to be better at the more scientific subjects such as physics and maths and I was never very good at art or design and technology. It was soon clear that something like architecture looked like it required too much 'drawing' and so put me off a bit. But then someone highlighted to me that the people most involved with these massive structures that I was always so fascinated with was engineers. Engineering can me an opportunity to be as creative as I wanted to me whilst still using the skills I was good at in school. "

The life I live

"In my spare time I love to travel and see different places. I volunteer with my Chartered Institute and am a STEM Ambassador."

My typical day

"I spend most of my day at my desk completing calculations, design tasks and producing system drawings on the computer. Sometimes I get the opportunity to go onto construction sites and see what I have designed being installed and check that all is being done correctly. "

My qualifications

"After my GCSEs I did three A-Levels in Maths, History and Physics. From there I went to university and got a MEng degree in Architectural Engineering from Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh. This degree was a building services engineering degree and I only specialised as an electrical engineer after starting work."
