About Shannon...
Who am I?
"I am a Technician working in the Civil Engineering industry. Day to day, I undertake work on infrastructure projects producing drawings, models and details for the designs. I work as part of a large team on different projects, so campaigner, coordinator and influencers are very important, to be able to explain things to people, listen and work collaboratively with others with the delivery of a project in mind."
What do I do?
"Since starting as an apprentice three years ago, I have worked on the drawing production and CAD modelling for various infrastructure projects, predominantly in the railway sector. I work with senior engineers to come up with designs and put them on paper, ready for construction workers and contractors to put the design into reality and build it. I get to visit site to see my drawings brought into the real world. I enjoy working with people of diverse backgrounds to come up with a solution to a design, but as I am on an apprenticeship scheme I also enjoy developing my knowledge through my studies and being given more responsibility in the workplace in doing so. A starting salary for an Apprentice in my sector can be anything from £15000 to £20000, depending on the level of qualification you're studying for and the company you're joining."
How did I get here?
"In August 2017 I started working for Arup as an Apprentice, studying a Level 4 qualification in Construction and the Built Environment. I have worked in the Rail team since then, working on various projects of different stages. Most notably, I worked on Exeter Depot Enhancement as lead technician, High Speed 2, and I am currently working on the design of Dawlish Coastal Scheme. I have visited a number of sites and worked with various teams of different backgrounds. I completed my first apprenticeship in July 2019, which I achieved distinctions in every subject, and I requested to be put onto the Degree Apprenticeship scheme (Level 6). As a condition of going onto the degree, I had to achieve my accreditation with the Institution of Civil Engineers, so in September I submitted my application and started my degree course. In November 2019, I interviewed for the Engineering Technician (EngTech) accreditation, for which I later found out that I had been successful. I have now completed my first year of my degree apprenticeship, and have three more to complete, throughout the course of which I will be gathering evidence for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status with the ICE. "
The life I live
"In my spare time I do a lot of drawing, but I also play football. My drawings are typically realism pieces of people and animals, but I try to just 'doodle' sometimes. I was on the fence about starting a career in Engineering originally, because I didn't think a creative person like myself would be any good at it, however coming from a creative background it has really helped me in my job. I have played football since the age of five, and after a few years out due to injury, I have been able to pick it back up again which is great."
My typical day
"My typical days at work start out with catching up on e-mails, checking in on updates for my projects and having a catch up with my team. However, once that's out of the way, the work I carry out day-to-day can vary. Some days I may be in meetings all day discussing the design of a project with different people, and other days I may be sat at the computer working on the CAD design. The project I'm currently working on is Dawlish Coastal Scheme. In 2014, the railway in Dawlish collapsed into the sea, so as part of South West Rail Resilience Programme I am working on numerous aspects of the design of the coastal defences to ensure that the incident doesn't occur again. My current part of the scheme is on a 450m stretch of the Dawlish coastline where Dawlish Railway station is situated. There are a lot of constraints and issues because of the heritage of the site and it being of historic significance. Working with my team I have been producing drawings for planning applications and design drawings for the construction of the scheme. It's a multi-million pound project and it's a privilege to be given the opportunity to work on it."
