About Guneet...

Who am I?

"My name's Guneet Kohli and I work at Arup as a Fluid Dynamics Engineer. This means I look at the way fluids move inside and around the outside of structures. I studied Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Leeds, and joined Arup as a graduate in 2017. In my degree we learnt how to use computer software to model the movement of air around aeroplanes. I now use this skill in my role at Arup, but do the modelling on a variety of projects such as buildings, transport, reservoirs and much more!My personality types perfectly match me and my role at Arup. As i work in teams with lots of other engineers, we need to be very coordinated to ensure a project runs smoothly. This involves being organised and working well in a team. All the personality types that matched for me involve these skills, as well as being a good listener and understanding the opinions of others in your team. I love working in a team and coming up with creative solutions to really complicated problems! "

What do I do?

"Fluids modelling has a range of benefits for different projects. Sometimes we look at the air flow inside buildings to see how comfortable people will be, and whether extra heating or cooling might be needed in that building. I've also worked on projects looking at modelling air outside buildings, to make sure the wind isn't too strong whilst people are trying to walk around. Other applications include modelling water in reservoirs, and modelling waves in the sea. I really enjoy the fact that there is so many applications to my job, that no two projects are ever the same!I've also worked a lot with climate change projections during my career. This involves using scripts in python to look at climate change data and get out projections for projects, meaning information on how the climate might be changing at a specific project location. I am passionate about the environment and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, so am glad I get to work towards making the world a better place as part of my job."

How did I get here?

"Whilst I was at school, my favourite subjects were Maths and Physics. However, I wanted to get past the theory of it all and really use it in real life applications. Therefore, Engineering seemed like the perfect career for me. I was also interested in mechanics and how planes fly, which led me to study Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering. I really enjoyed my degree and we worked on some cool projects (like building a glider and a mars rover buggy!). When it came to graduating, I decided I wanted a more varied career, and to work on more projects than just be limited to aeroplanes. This led me to Arup, an engineering consultancy who work on such a wide range of projects around the globe. "

The life I live

"In my spare time, I love meeting up with friends and having a good catch up! I also like running and bounce classes to keep fit. Bounce is an aerobic workout all done whilst jumping on a mini trampoline. It's great fun and I highly recommend trying it out! I also like reading and have recently learnt how to crochet."

My typical day

"My typical day is on the computer. We use specialist software to model the fluid flow. A lot of work goes into making sure the model (CAD) is suitable for the project, and also looking at the results and how best to present them to the client. I get to do a lot of presentations where we demonstrate the results of the project, mostly these are fairly informal. I also try to make time for training. As engineers we are constantly developing our skills and working with cutting edge technology, so its important to be consistently improving your skills and learning new skills. I also make sure I have regular breaks from the computer, by grabbing a coffee and catching up with my engineering collegues."
