What do I do?

"I am an Audiologist & Hearing Therapist. In simple terms it means I help people with all types of ear issues & problems. They can be anything from not hearing well, to hearing sounds in their ears, to finds certain sounds uncomfortable. I help the person find ways to stop the problem from affecting their life. The thing I enjoy most about my job is when someone who has come into my room with an problem leaves with a solution. They have a better understanding that their issue is not life ending and that they are still a normal human being. The starting salary for my role. A Hearing aid assistant (new entrants to the sector to work alongside Hearing Aid Dispensers and support them in their daily tasks) is around £15K, NHS Audiologist is around £20K."

How did I get here?

"I was born with hearing issues that were never picked up until I was 20 years old. I spent a lot of school being told by teachers I wasn’t bright enough to have an education. When I was 20 a new diagnosis called Auditory Processing Disorder was being tested. My hearing was so bad, I didn’t even register on the score sheet. A few years after a new Degree called Audiology was created. I enrolled and completed this degree in 2008. This lead me to a career helping people to struggle with their ears. "

The life I live

"I host for a social group called Thinking Bob. It introduces new people to London and to new friends. I love doing random and new things that take me out of my comfort zone. Like zip-lining across a London Park, or going down a vertical slide. I love being a nerd/geek. I regularly do quizzes, escape rooms, immersive theatre with my friends. I love exploring the randomness of London. I love the hashtag YOLO as I take it as don’t be too serious in life as you only have it once. I am the one in my group of friends that is probably laughing at something I did. "

My typical day

"At the moment I am Furloughed (Covid 19). If I was at work I would start at 9am, after walking there for 1 hour. Between 0900-1200 and 1300-1730 I see patients. The appointments can be 30 mins long or up to 90mins long. I do anything from talking to them, taking wax out of their ears, taking impressions, testing their hearing, giving them hearing aids, fixing broken hearing aids. I also have to do ALLLLLLLLLL admin, emails and reports as well during these times. I have lunch between 1200-1300. All my paperwork is on grey paper as I can't see well on white paper.Currently, I still get up at 7am. Run, mediate and ‘start work’ at 9am. I still have lunch at 1200-1300 and finish ‘work’ at 1730. Work is currently online training, answering emails. I have just volunteered to help mentor people with tinnitus (ringing in their ears) during Covid19 lockdown. I am trying to create a website to help people understand how to handle their hearing struggles. I have a great belief that everyone is intelligent, it’s just that they don’t know the subject. "

My qualifications

"BSc Auidiology (Hons) and many many many further courses to make me understand the ears better. I have just finished The Science of Well-being online course. The route I took to my current role is a long and windy one. At 20, I left University after 1 year and ended up working for a PR company. I then left and started working for the BBC as one of their permanent, temporary assistants. This basically means I was employed by the BBC but only worked in a specific job for a couple of months before going on to another one. I then worked at Guildhall School of Music as The Administrator for the Junior School. I basically ran & was front of house for the Saturday school. During the summer holiday I found the degree of Audiology and enrolled.During my Degree I worked back at the BBC to get money. I ended up working for the controllers of the channels. When I finished my degree I worked full time as a locum audiologist for 6 years. I worked for NHS audiology departments all over England. This means I was like Nanny MacPhee. I worked for a department when they needed me but did not want me and I left when they wanted me but did not need me. In 2014 I joined Harley Street Hearing as a Senior Audiologist and Hearing Therapist. I created a hearing therapy clinic there to help people with hearing issues. "
