About Fiona...

Who am I?

"The personality types I matched with were Coordinator, Influencer and Trainer. All three of these types involve being organised, creative and helping others, which I'd say are strength areas for me and great qualities to have in my career.Coordinators are patient, compassionate and 'pull people together'. I can relate to this, as I always try to put myself in others' shoes and make sure the young people and employees I'm responsible for are looked after. My job allows me to work with lots of different people; I love bringing them together to share knowledge and come up with new ideas. Influencers are diplomatic and can think outside the box. In my work, I often come across challenging people and situations but I'm a peace-keeper and I will always try and find a good solution, however crazy it may seem at the time!Trainers are organised and thrive on helping people improve. These are both important qualities in my work, as I have a busy job spread right across the UK and it involves helping people learn."

What do I do?

"I love my job as it's really varied and I get to help people every day. I create fun activities, workshops and placements for young people interested in the technology company I work for. I represent my company in events including careers fairs and STEM festivals. I work in project teams that are helping employees learn, develop new skills and come up with new ways to grow our business. And I work in an office where there's lots of great chat and support for one another!"

How did I get here?

"Throughout school and university, I had no idea what job I wanted to do, so I kept my options open and studied a wide range of subjects. This meant there were lots of possible careers open to me - but at the time, it felt overwhelming and unfortunately I wasn't very good at decision making! I took the first job I was offered (organising interviews and hiring people for a small company), which then led to me getting a similar job in a bigger company, and over time I learned a lot about what I enjoyed, didn't enjoy and wanted to achieve through my work. Perhaps I should have had a longer-term plan but I made my career moves based on the opportunities that came up and what I had learned about the person I wanted to be and the work I wanted to do. Looking back on it all now, growing my career in this way has taught me to be flexible and not afraid of change."

The life I live

"I love dancing, reading, arts and crafts (especially papercraft, clay modelling, painting and sewing), going to the gym, spending time with my family and friends, babysitting and eating chocolate!"

My typical day

"I work full-time, 5 days a week from 8:30am to 5pm with an hour for lunch. In a typical day, I'll drive to work, have breakfast and then do most of my work on a computer - sending emails, taking part in video calls, doing research, working on documents (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), etc. I'll also attend meetings and I often go to outside events, such as STEM festivals and careers fairs, where I talk to young people about our company and careers in technology. I do a lot of my work myself but I also work in teams for some projects. My main projects at the moment are designed to help people grow, succeed and be happy - whether that be my fellow employees or young people in our local communities."
