About Emma...

Who am I?

"I enjoy working as part of a team, but can take more of a lead role when required. I really do believe teamwork makes the dream work! As an Engineer it is essential that I work well as part of a team, as it takes lots of different people with different skills to pull a project together and make it successful. Communication is also key, as it means we all know who's doing what element of the project and why. I also love to share my engineering journey with others to hopefully influence them to take up a career in STEM. "

What do I do?

"I'm an Applications Engineer at Fairfield Control Systems. We specialise in industrial control systems and have worked on projects such as Tower Bridge and Wimbledon Centre Court Roof. The thing I love most about my job is getting to see how different things work. I also enjoy solving problems which is essential as an Engineer. "

How did I get here?

"I started with Fairfields as an Apprentice after I had finished my Level 3 at college. I have been with the company around 8 years now and they have sponsored me through my qualifications including my degree. During my apprenticeship I got to work in all the areas around the company to get a good feel for how the company works as a whole. After 3 years I was offered a full time position as a Design Engineer, I worked in this role until 2017 when I moved to my current department as an Applications Engineer. "

The life I live

"I spend most of my spare time reading or volunteering. I am currently a STEM Ambassador and a Young Apprentice Ambassador, as part of these roles I visit careers fairs and schools across the country to share my journey into engineering through an Apprenticeship. I am very passionate about apprenticeships and in 2014 I was named as the East Midlands Higher Apprentice of the Year. In 2019 I was named as one of the WES Top 50 Women in Engineering."

My typical day

"Most days I am in the office answering emails, talking to customers or reading through/studying technical specifications and drawings. I have to interpret all of the information in order to understand the customers requirements so that I can engineer a solution and produce a cost estimate for how much I think the project will cost. I then have to produce a tender proposal detailing each element of the job including how long it will take, the equipment we will use and the cost to do it. Sometimes my job requires me to visit site to gather more information, which is amazing as I love to see things working so that I can understand them better. When I go to site I get a tour of the equipment and an explanation of how things currently work and what they would like to achieve. I will then collect further information by taking photos, measurements and even a few quick sketches. This all helps me build a picture of what we are trying to achieve!I get to work on a large variety of projects, which is great as I am always getting to learn new things."

My qualifications
