About Madeleine...
Who am I?
"My personality type results were communicator, coordinator and influencer. I feel like the communicator and coordinator types definitely suit me well! I'm confident in written and verbal communication and also love to make figures / diagrams to better convey concepts. In my job I need to arrange large site investigations and communication and coordination skills are key in this! I love working as part of a team and making plans / programmes to help organise the team and help us work efficiently. I think the influencer personality also suits me well, I am able to show leadership in managing projects, am good at hunting down and reviewing information and love to look into the detail of things!"
What do I do?
"As a geotechnical engineer I am involved in all things below ground for new developments. I manage site investigations to uncover what the geological conditions at sites are and then carry out modelling and analysis to provide clients with assessments about whether a project will work and what it's impacts may be on nearby structures. I love that my job allows me to get outside but also that it is very analytical and I get to use a lot of really cool software to solve challenging problems. When I started as a graduate engineer I earnt £22,000 per year. "
How did I get here?
"I went to the University of Bristol and studied Geology with a year abroad at the University of Melbourne and achieved a 2:1 in my MSci. When I started work I found that I loved the civil engineering aspects of my job and decided I wanted to go down the path to become a chartered civil engineer. As I hadn't studied an engineering degree I took part time modules on the University of Surrey Civil and Environmental Engineering MSc course to improve my understanding of engineering theory and allow me to carry on with my progression to becoming chartered. "
The life I live
"I love to draw! I have a small illustration business doing freelance work and commissions and have just done my first ever pop up shop! I also love ready and getting out for hikes and bike rides!"
My typical day
"I'm an early bird so like to get up early and either do a bit of exercise before work or do some reading. I start work at 8am and will typically work on a wide range of projects through the day. This can include arranging resources, equipment and contractors for site investigation projects, writing proposal for work, carrying out geotechnical analyses using 2D and 3D modelling software as well as hand calculations and writing reports. I'm working towards becoming a chartered civil engineer and hope to achieve this by the end of 2021."
My qualifications
"A levels in Maths (A), Chemistry (A), Biology (A*). AS level in Further Maths (B). MSci in Geology with a year abroad (2:1)"
