About Lisa...

Who am I?

"Coach - Coordinator -TrainerClose match! In my role its important to understand people, how to get them what they need and how to share important information with them. I have to communicate with other people a lot so being friendly and understanding are useful qualities too. I am also passionate about sharing my knowledge and solving problems. "

What do I do?

"My main role is to manage the development of standard drawings. The drawings that I take care of are for a specific part of the railway called Switches and Crossings (this is the section that helps a train travel from one track to another). I will make amendments myself using a computer drawing program, and also manage the process for drawings amended and created by other businesses on Network Rails behalf. "

How did I get here?

"I actually changed my mind about what I wanted to do and my first career choice was working with young children. I wanted to do something different but I wasn't sure what so I applied to Universities to study. Whilst I was waiting for the application process I took some temporary work to save some money up. I was placed in the technical track office with Network Rail, and after a couple of months of assisting with survey data I was interested to know more; why these surveys were being carried out and how. The technical team took the time to show me and explain the processes and I was really interested to learn more! I joined Network Rail, and instead of going to university I worked and studied at the same time to gain my qualifications and went on to work as a Technical officer and then Senior Technical officer. My next role was Performance and Assurance Engineer where I investigated faults and delays ensuring these were recorded correctly to ensure teams understood the areas that required more maintenance. After a few years I then Joined the S&C team as the Track Drawings Engineer. "

The life I live

"Being the primary parent to two sons, as well as my career keeps me very busy, but I wouldn't have it any other way. In between sports clubs, school and my work the 3 of us love adventures and exploring new places and spending time outside around forests, lakes and parks. I also enjoying running and the odd bit of indoor skiing. I like to relax with a good read or spending time with my friends and family, and of course planning new trips and adventures!"

My typical day

"I usually start my day reviewing my emails. We receive daily reports of events on the railway for the last day, which helps us understand areas to work on or where our team can help. I spend time helping people find what they need or understanding if there are parts of the railway where a new or updated drawing is required. I will then make updates to drawings using my computer programme called CAD. Our team has developed a new design of Switches and Crossings which requires less maintenance and last for a longer time, and so lots of new drawings have been created for each part. Its important for me to check the drawings to ensure they have the detail they need as this will help track designers when installing this type of track. Its very important to get this correct because Switches and crossings move trains across the tracks and we need to make sure this happens safely and smoothly so that you don't spill your drink when you are a passenger on a train! In the afternoon I will work on other standard documents which are instructions for the railway process and equipment. Once I have updated the document so that it has the most up to date information I will then review updates from different areas who have carried out tasks for these standards and these updates are used to help us show train companies and passengers that we are looking after the railway in the way we need to. "
