About Margaret...
Who am I?
"When I was younger, I used to be really shy. It wasn't until I started the apprenticeship that I stared to build and develop relationships to those around me. I am just at the start of my career and especially in an industry that is dominated by males, I have found it important gain different experiences and realised there is something that I can learn each and every person I meet. Coordinating a lot of volunteering activities both inside and outside of work gives me the opportunity to manage a wide range of people. I always like to try new things and new ways to do thing, positively influencing those around me and hopefully inspiring them to learn and work towards their dreams."
What do I do?
"I am an Engineering Degree Apprentice at GE Aviation Systems where I have the chance to experience a variety of roles in difference disciplines of engineering including test equipment, coding software, requirements management, and manufacturing engineering. I get to work with some of the newest technologies in the aviation industry and all of my work contribute to some of the parts of the planes that fly in the sky.As an apprentice, I am also studying part time for my engineering degree funded by the company and take part in a lot of the STEM outreach we do with local school students. "
How did I get here?
"Ever since I was young, I have been interested in solving puzzles. In school, my favourite subjects were Maths and Science, unlike most of the other girls in my year group. I took part in GE's GirlsGetSET scheme where I was meet others of the same age with similar interests to me. From these events, I managed to secure myself some work experience with a few different engineering companies to see which area I would be interested in. I studied A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics, and Chemistry, after which I applied for university and apprenticeships but decided that doing an apprenticeship would give me both the academics and experience that I would need to become a well rounded engineer. "
The life I live
"I love to fill my time with different activities. Back in school, I was an avid reader and enjoyed learning how to play musical instruments like piano and violin, and playing sports like football and table tennis. When I find myself with some free time, I like to try new things like baking, knitting, and coding my own website.I am also involved with volunteering with Boys' Brigade. I lead the youngest section as well as the local young leaders group, organising activities from craft and games to competitions and camps. From achieving my Gold DofE with BB, I have gained my Expedition and Outdoor Leadership where I can now take groups hiking in the outdoors."
My typical day
"I've been lucky to have a my days filled with different tasks ranging from the less exciting documents writing and management to the more interesting lab testing and everything in between. I could be using simple Excel spreadsheet to track and display data or coding my own tool to simplify engineering tasks. The think I do most every day is talking to lots of different people, even when I have been working from home. Communication is one of the most important skills that is used in everything that I do whether it updating the customer on my progress, discussing the best course of action with my team, reporting to my manager, or engaging with students at the events I volunteer at. "
My qualifications
