About Vivian...

Who am I?

"I enjoy an analytical process so like to dig into engineering problems and always try to remain creative and keep an open mind to propose potential solutions."

What do I do?

"I am a doctoral researcher in thermal engineering - I have to design compact systems, which means we always need to compromise on material to save weight and space. I get great satisfaction when I have solutions to issues and see it implemented all the way through."

How did I get here?

"I studied Aviation Engineering in my first degree but became really interested in physics - particularly the state of matter, things you cannot see and tend to be very abstract thing to study - in engineering terms this is what we call thermodynamics. I worked as a research assistant in this subject and when I finished decided that I want more! So that is how I decided to do a PhD in this field."

The life I live

"I play the piano and enjoy swimming and running. I also do pottery and I learn languages as a hobby, I have just started Russian this year. These activities really help me vary what I do in a day and keeps me productive and fresh."

My typical day

"I start my day reading scientific papers and the rest of it analysing data/running experiments in the lab. By the end of the day I always like to have found an explanation for a phenomenon we are seeing in our data. I also liaise with our sponsors and academics to inform them of our progress and discuss future development directions of the project."

My qualifications

"I took a Foundation in Science programme - Further Maths, Maths, Physics, English. "
