About Laura...
Who am I?
"I have been matched as a Coordinator, a Manager and a Quality Controller, which all fit with my role as a Senior Biomedical Scientist in a busy Cellular Pathology laboratory, which requires good organisational skills. I am part of a team which delivers a service for patients by providing clinical support in a hospital setting. Good communication is essential when working as a team as well as being open minded to the opinions of others. My curious nature and high attention to detail is beneficial when looking down the microscope for cellular changes within patient tissue samples.I am passionate about helping others and love that I can incorporate this into my job role, challenging and motivating individuals to work as a team to cover all tasks and deliver a high quality service."
What do I do?
"My role involves working as part of a team looking for pathological changes in cell and tissue samples. This involves a lot of manual skills and a keen eye for microscopy work. I lead a more specialised section of the department which, amongst other things, mainly focuses on cancer diagnostics. I enjoy being able to deliver answers to diagnostic questions, providing support to Clinicians in order for them to chose the most appropriate treatments for patients."
How did I get here?
"My journey began when I completed my BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences. From here I gained full time employment as a trainee Biomedical Scientist, working my way through my registration portfolio until I became a fully qualified Biomedical Scientist. I have always been driven to achieve the best that I can and so though hard work and a willingness to learn, I began a MSc in Biomedical Sciences where I was chosen for 2 awards, Best Project Poster and Best Project for my work in a novel approach to HER2 testing in Breast Cancer.I have progressed through the ranks and gained my Senior position in the department some years ago, continuing to work hard and encourage others to pursue their dreams. My most recent accolade was being accepted onto the CSO WISE Leadership Development Programme where I have been developing and building on my leadership skills in order to become a role model to others."
The life I live
"First and foremost, I am a mum to 3 amazing daughters who challenge me every single day and help me to stay focused. My spare time is precious so I enjoy having fun with my girls, playing in the garden and going for walks.I am a keen football fan and have a season ticket watching Everton. I like to exercise when I can, enjoying jogging and yoga practice, with the odd kettle bell session thrown in. I also enjoy relaxing with my friends and doing activities as families together."
My typical day
"My day starts early, organising the laboratory so that all daily tasks are covered, including the various Mohs and Head and Neck clinics that we provide support for. I compile my To Do list for the day and work through this in order of priority. Each day can be very different, which is one of the things that I love about my role. A lot of my time involves replying to emails and dealing with general laboratory queries and issues as well as attending various meetings. I am responsible for overseeing the running of the Immunohistochemistry department so much of my day is spent assessing the quality of staining under a microscope, maintaining stock control and scoring sections of breast cancer for eligibility for hormone therapies.Daily five minute meetings occur where issues can be discussed as a team, this helps to notify as many people as possible of any changes.I am in the process of completing a project that involves a team approach to implementing a new assay for improving the time taken for lung cancer testing, providing Clinicians with results which will benefit patients, in terms of treatment options. Where possible, I like to spend the last hour of the day making sure that I have completed everything that I started and preparing for the next day."
