About Alexandra...

Who am I?

"I feel the personality types I have matched with largely match the work that I complete. In my current role I co-ordinate the production and maintenance across the Shell Esso Gas & Liquids line which supplies 25% of the UK gas supply. This involves working with a vast range of stakeholders day to day both in the UK and Norway"

What do I do?

"I am currently on the Shell UK graduate scheme in the Production Operations skill pool. In my role, I am responsible for coordinating the production and maintenance plans for the short, medium and long term of the Shell Esso Gas and Liquids Pipeline (SEGAL). The system is responsible for supply 25% of the UK's gas supply and is therefore a very important role to ensure security of supply to the UK. The day to day requirements of this role involve me liaising with a range of stakeholders across the system in both Norway and the UK. I thoroughly enjoy my role as I work in a fast paced operational environment where no two days are the same. The starting salary for the Shell graduate scheme is £37,500 and then gradually increases throughout the progression in the graduate scheme performance based. "

How did I get here?

"I was always interested in building things and problem solving when I was growing up. I studied Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Maths and English at high school before progressing to the University of Strathclyde where I studied a Masters in Chemical Engineering. Throughout my university career, I completed a variety of internships across a range of diverse industries. Following my second year of university, I completed an internship in Dubai through the Athena Swan initiative at Heriot Watt University where I was an assistant to the Director of the Petroleum Engineering Program. This was my first real experience of the oil and gas industry and I was very fortunate to have a fantastic mentor called Sarika Varma who was a very well established female engineer in the Middle East. When I returned to university for my third year, I knew I really wanted to expand my horizons and go abroad again if possible. This is when I came across the Saltire Foundation. This is an organisation that is devoted to making Scotland the most entrepreneurial society in the world. Through this program I found myself in Dallas, TX where I worked for Rolls Royce & American Airlines as an operations engineer at an aircraft hanger for RB-211 and Trent 800 engines. This was totally out of my comfort zone, and was an industry I previously knew nothing about however it was a key step on my journey for me entering into the world of operations. This was an opportunity like no other, and still to date one of the best experience I have ever had. Following my 2015 internship with Saltire, I knew I wanted to enter the world of operations but I just wasn't sure where...This brought me to Shell. In 2016, I found myself in sunny Aberdeen, to complete an process engineering internship. I was working for an asset in the North Sea providing daily operational support. I thoroughly enjoyed this role and this is what brought me back to Shell in 2017 to join the graduate scheme as a trainee operations supervisor wor"

The life I live

"I absolutely love going to the theatre, I think it is the BEST evening of entertainment money can buy, and so because of that I am also in an amateur musical theatre group and perform in shows throughout Aberdeen. I am also currently learning to play piano and golf and so go to lessons for both of these during the week too! "

My typical day

"In my job no two days are ever the same and this is one of the things I love most about it. Working in an operational production environment means that over the course of 24 hours lots of things can change with so many moving parts. I start off the day by checking what has been going on with out production platforms in the North Sea offshore before I dial into the morning meeting to discuss the changes. Then I check if we need to make any changes to our supply chain set up to optimise our process. After this I will chat with my colleagues in shipping to check if there are any changes to upcoming product liftings that I need to consider. Over the course of the day I then join different calls with our external partners to discuss upcoming maintenance, new projects and any other adhoc activities that could impact production and then I align all of these where possible to ensure we are maximising production across the value chain at all times. "

My qualifications

"Masters with Distinction in Chemical Engineering "
