About Claire...

Who am I?

"The personality types shown here match well with my job role. I have to be a good communicator and influencer to ensure we make effective change for a more sustainable future. I work with people globally and I have to be able to help them understand why sustainability is important and how to embed it in their projects and what they deliver. Influencing skills are essential. I manage a large portfolio of work and therefore the ability to coordinate activities is vital to my success in my job. "

What do I do?

"Putting it simply I like to say \"I save the world one project at a time\". Might sound like a bit of a cliché but I really do believe that I make a difference every day. My work is focused around inputting sustainability into the every day and helping people to recognise risks and opportunities related to sustainability so we can deliver the best outcomes. I enjoy working with lots of people and seeing some great success. "

How did I get here?

"I have been in the industry for nearly 10 years and have held various roles over that time. I started my career in a small company who sold energy efficiency technology. I then moved into construction to a contractor where I managed their Climate Change processes and systems. I then moved into a client facing role and focused on business development. I moved to another company where I gained a lot more experience in environmental compliance including to standards like ISO14001 and sustainability strategy. I then moved to Atkins a few years ago and have been working on projects in Rail, Highways and Water as well as driving forward the Corporate Strategy. "

The life I live

"In my spare time I play the flute and piccolo in a marching band. I also do Pilates and love to swim. "

My typical day

"Every day in my job is varied. I have some days where I am in meetings most of the day and others where I am at my laptop reply to enquiries or writing reports. The types of meetings I attend include workshops, client meetings, strategic planning meetings and team meetings. Workshops help us to brainstorm about a particular topic whether that is carbon emissions, sustainability or environmental management. Client meetings can be to discuss a particular project or sustainability requirements and how we plan to implement them. In strategic planning meetings we will be looking at what is the strategy going forward for the business or project and setting discussing clear objectives. Team meetings will be where we discuss as a team what everyone is up to and our progress against the team targets. I have been managing a team for the past year and therefore I spend a lot of time discussing things with various members of the team. In terms of writing documents these may include implementation plans, sustainability strategies and Sustainable Design Plans. "
