About Rebecca...

Who am I?

"My personality types definitely match with me!I'm a Coordinator, Trainer and Communicator. This means I'm good with words and numbers, and simplifying complex information - I analyse data and then have to use that to explain to my colleagues what we need to do to keep the track running well.I'm good at engaging audiences and being open minded - this is important for when we do have bigger problems to deal with. It means I can pull everyone together, and then listen to everyone's ideas before we put a plan of action together. I'm willing to help when it's needed, and passionate about sharing knowledge - I'm always happy to get stuck in and make sure anyone who's stuck with something gets the help they need.I'm organised and efficient - which is key to keeping on top of things and making sure everything run smoothly! My personality traits all lend themselves really well to my job."

What do I do?

"I work in a team that focuses on railway competence and capability over a large portion of the UK. I analyse where we have competence gaps, where our business risks are, and develop the tools and resources to ensure that our engineering capability is the best it can be!I love that my job helps others to better understand their potential and sets up the right tools to ensure we incorporate new technology into the railway properly. The starting salary for my role is just over £50,000 per year."

How did I get here?

"I spent 5 1/2 years as an apprentice with a company called Amey. Here I learnt all the basics about working in an engineering office - how to write reports, complete risk assessments, create design drawings... anything my team needed me to do! I loved learning about all the 'simple' tasks that add up to make a big project come together.I then worked for AECOM for six months, creating design drawings for the Ordsall Chord in Manchester. I still find it bizarre to think that the drawings I created at this time are now a fully functioning rail network! In 2015 I came to work for Network Rail, where I've had many opportunities to work with different teams and learn about different areas of the business. I worked in track bed design, asset management and front line maintenance before taking up my current role in competence and capability.."

The life I live

"I still enjoy the creative side of my personality. Photography is one of my favourite hobbies, and I'm often told off for constantly taking pictures!"

My typical day

"I spend most of my time at a desk on my laptop. I'll answer any emails or queries in the morning and then begin looking into different sources of data to assess performance and identify any new risks. I'll spend time on teams meetings, catching up with my Line Manager, and getting involved in any new projects that might need some support with competency issues. One of the bigger projects I'm working on is identifying where our competence gaps are across the business. Where there's a competence gap, there's a risk. This could be to staff, to railway infrastructure, or even to the travelling public! By identifying a risk, I can then work to create the right processes and resources to ensure we can close the gap and make a safer railway for everyone."

My qualifications

"All of my education post-GCSE has been undertaken part time whilst I've been working.I've completed a BTEC and HNC in Civil Engineering, and I've just completed a degree (BEng) in Engineering Design with the Open University.I've also gained a professional qualification, EngTech, and will soon be looking to complete IEng."
