About Emma...
Who am I?
"As a coordinator I am organised and a good team player. In an environment where systems are developed in a team, it is key to be able to help out where you are needed. As an influencer, I am good at explaining things so that others can understand. Issues arise frequently in software, and both explaining your issues or trying to fix other peoples can become complex very easily with poor explanations. As a trainer I am passionate about sharing my knowledge with others. I use this quality heavily in my STEM and apprenticeship ambassador work outside of the standard 'day job'."
What do I do?
"I work on the interfaces for the UK's submarines and ships. The best part of my job so far has to be going onto a submarine!A Thales software apprentice will start on £14,500 and has the opportunity to earn a pay-rise every 6 months!"
How did I get here?
"I did A-Levels in Computer Science, Mathematics and Product Design. In college I looked at different degree courses but decided it wasn't right for me and started applying for apprenticeships instead.I was always passionate about programming and knew I wanted to get stuck into work where I could focus on coding rather than the theory that is more common in a Computer Science degree. "
The life I live
"I enjoy gaming, reading and binging shows in my spare time.I also love socialising with my friends, whether that's shopping, playing pool or going out for some drinks!"
My typical day
"I start my day off checking emails and then move onto looking through the tasks I need to fulfil. There's always a team meeting called a 'Stand-up' where you hear what everyone's worked on the day before and what they plan to do today. You can also discuss anything you're stuck on in your task.As an apprentice I have a mentor who helps explain my tasks to me - but I mostly get left to it once someone's run me through the process. And in software there's always time for a coffee break!"
My qualifications
"I studied A-Levels in Computer Science, Maths and Product Design - I achieved BAA in these respectively. My apprenticeship is actually a degree apprenticeship and I study a BSc (hons) in Digital and Technology Solutions (Software Engineering) at Manchester Metropolitan University."
