Principal Project Engineer at Siemens Mobility Rail Infrastructure UK&I
If someone says you 'can't' do something because you are female, then do it anyway.
About Helen...
Who am I?
"I found that the personality types fix exactly to me: Coordinator, Manager and Trainer. In my role as Principal Project Engineer I need to communicate with a range of people in order to understand their requirements and communicate these to the customer or other members of the project team. Working in assurance roles means I work across all of the different engineering functions on a project so I need to be a good 'coordinator' by knowing what people want, asking questions, working with others in order to deliver solutions that are fit for purpose. I also have to be a good 'manager' because I need to be able to encourage discussion between functions in order for us to solve problems and meet customer requirements/expectations. Additionally I need to be able to 'train' others on topics such as legislation to ensure that we are compliant with the law."
What do I do?
"I ensure that the activities we carry out on a project are safe, this includes ensuring that processes have been followed and people are competent to carry out the activities they have. In summary I manage engineering risk and ensure that its reduced to a broadly acceptable level so that we minimise harm if something does go wrong. Worst case scenario is having a situation where you have a train collision because of something we have done. But this also covers damage to the environment or infrastructure and also damage to reputation.I have an assurance role, which you can think of it like a police officer making sure the project is being run in a way which is compliant with health and safety law and that the correct processes are being followed. "
How did I get here?
"I came into the business as a team organiser but found engineering quite interesting and transferred into railway signalling design. I then did an ONC and then a HNC in Electronics and Electrical Engineering at a local college and then a Masters Degree in Systems Engineering at Warwick University - Siemens sponsored me for all of my further education. I moved into Research and Development and became a systems engineer writing requirements for our control systems and after 9 years in that role I transferred into my current role.I never considered it as a career when I was at school and I am passionate about educating people about engineering as I think it is an amazing career and often misrepresented.People who inspire me are those people who have helped me learn more and be a better engineer. My plans are to become a technical expert in railway systems in order to transform rail travel and improve the travelling experience of passengers."
The life I live
"I am a fourth degree blackbelt in Tae Kwon Do and have been training for 20 years, and have won numerous regional and national tournaments. I I train and compete on a regular basis. I also enjoy reading, cooking and running and I am a mum to a little boy called Archer."
My typical day
"This varies quite a lot. It could be delivering training on safety legislation to ensure we are compliant or briefing out the most recent update to standards to the engineering in the region. It could be signing off design assuring that the process has been followed and that the people who have done the work are competent. Or it could be assessing the risk of a deviation from a process and determining mitigating actions to manage the risk and ensuring the work is carried out so that a safe and healthy railway is delivered."
