Head of Product and Propositions at TalkTalk
Try different things - it will take a while to find something that you enjoy and are good at (this goes for university courses, jobs and partners!). Don't be afraid to fail - this way you will learn what works and what doesn't (there is a lot of power in knowing what you DO NOT want to do with your life). And once you find it, stick with it!
About Gosia...
Who am I?
" I have the Manager personality trait and I like managing people in a way that gives them my full trust and free rein for them to work. I always drive delivery of new ideas and break barriers in making them happen. Most importantly, I always think about the customer first, which is a Coordinator personality trait. "
What do I do?
"I manage a team with the goal of ensuring that customers receive the products that they bought and their products are performing the way they should. I work closely with a wide range of people internally and externally, such as suppliers, technical design teams and customer experience teams making sure that we all communicate well. Each role I took throughout my career was terrifying at the beginning (there is no point in taking a job you know you can do with your eyes closed) and the way I grew in each of them, got confident and excelled is just as exciting each time. The career path is well defined, but with opportunities to step sideways and learn about other areas of the business, get involved in new activities and learn new things. While I do not have the opportunity to travel in my current role, being able to save money to take a year out and go travelling around the world with my husband and daughter was the most amazing and worthwhile thing I did."
How did I get here?
"I get inspired by people around me; my Dad for his strength despite what life throws at him, my manager for people leadership, my husband for positive attitude and passion for life and my daughter (5 years old) for reminding me what's really important. I come from a fairly creative family (both parents are architects), so looking for innovative solutions to problems is in my blood. I took up technical studies in English as I enjoyed technology and knew it would enable me to move away from Poland afterwards. I worked in a range of customer facing roles (including 10 months at a diner in Gala Bingo!), in advertising and marketing agencies, before running my own team designing and building exhibition stands. I then applied for a unique leadership in BT which gave me a chance to try out different parts of the corporate world. I was fascinated by the world of product / propositions and over the 4 years there decided this is the right area for me. While on my maternity leave I got head hunted for a new product development role in Virgin Media, which I left 3 years later to go travelling with my family for a year. I then moved to TalkTalk and got promoted a year later to my current role. I'm a self starter and always competing with myself."
The life I live
"I am learning to horse ride and volunteer at a stable every week. I also enjoy travelling, diving and geocaching. I'm quite a creative person and get emerged into various arts and crafts projects with my daughter."
My typical day
"No two days are the same. In a day I can be presenting updates on my projects to a very senior team, coming up with new ideas in a brainstorming session, designing new products, building communication plans, speaking to suppliers and most importantly helping my team to excel in their work. "
My qualifications
"Secondary education (GCSE/O-Levels) Post secondary education (College, A-levels, NVQ3 or equivalent) Undergraduate degree (BSc, BA, etc.) Post-graduate degree (MSc, MA, etc.) MSc Engineering Project Management and MSc Business and Technology PRINCE2 and a range of product related courses / diplomas "
