About Lauren...
Who am I?
"I would say the personality types of coordinator and trainer fit with my personality type - and both of these definitely fit the work I do! In terms of trainer - I teach others how to use new technologies. I am also a coordinator, I need to have organisation and deliver what people what in order to do a good job. "
What do I do?
"I'm 24 and have worked at Lloyds Banking Group for the past 2 years - it was my first proper full time job! I work in Machine Intelligence, specifically Natural Language Processing, which is looking at how to analyse the language used on Lloyds' conversations with customers, for example when they have been setting up a bank account. I've worked in Machine Intelligence as a whole for about 8 months, but only in this specific area for the last month or so!Although my role sounds 'techy', it's actually a lot of it is coordination. I'm looking at setting up a new piece of software and rolling it out across the bank, so I'm the person that needs to ask the logical questions about how things are going to work in practice! My favourite thing about my role is working with other people and looking back at all we've achieved over the past few weeks! Thinks move very fast as the technology moved quickly, but I find that exciting. I joined Lloyds on the graduate scheme, so the starting salary is c£30k. "
How did I get here?
"I was born in Sheffield and completed all my education there, until in 2013 where I went up to Newcastle University to study for my degree. I finished university in 2016, and then decided I wanted to do some travelling! I took a job in a call centre, while applying to graduate schemes so I had a permanent role when I returned from travelling. I did English at university - which doesn't seem very related to what I'm doing now, but through my time at university, I decided I wanted a career in 'digital' - it was up and coming and sounded like the next big thing! So I applied to graduate schemes in 'digital' at various different companies, and was offered one at Lloyds Banking Group!Lloyds Banking Group offer a 2 year graduate scheme, with three 8 month rotations. Luckily, I was based in London for all 3 so I didn't need to move about much. I tried roles in various different areas, including Digital Risk and Commercial Internet Banking, before finally starting a job in Machine Intelligence, specifically Robotics. I really enjoyed my final placement, and so when I was offered a role in another part of Machine Intelligence called Intelligent Products, I was excited to take it! Funnily enough, now my work combines bits of my degree (analysing language) with my work in the call centre (as that is the source of the language), using machines to create better experiences for our colleagues and customers. "
The life I live
"I live in London so there is plenty to do! I love seeing my friends - as a lot of them moved here from university too - and doing things like going to the theatre, going to parks and going for dinner! I love keeping busy so my weekends are usually jam-packed. I also like running in my spare time and normally have a half-marathon to train for, so I'll often spend a few nights a week going for a run. "
My typical day
"I usually arrive in the morning and spend some time replying to emails. I'll normally have a lot of meetings, solutionising what we want to do next and how we want to implement technologies within the business. I have to understand the technologies in order to train areas of the business that are using them. The aim is that the technology that we bring on board is used throughout the business successfully and benefits customers and colleagues. "
