Mia Baker
Partnership Implementation & Project Manager at Prenetics
Hi! My name is Mia, and I love to create things! At work, I'm known as the one who 'makes it happen'.
About Mia...
Who am I?
"I love to bring together the best people to turn many great ideas, into one spectacular idea - I'm a coordinator. As a coordinator, you need strong people skills. You have to be able to connect empathetically with customers so you can create and design the best product for them. I'm a strong believer in the customer, and everything should be built to better suit their needs. Think about it, how many times have you tried to open a door, only to find out it's a pull and not a push? That doesn't make you, the customer, wrong. It means the door was poorly designed! As a coordinator you can bring together the biggest and the best ideas, and truly reach for the stars to create products that make a difference!"
What do I do?
"I work for a biotech start-up. What they do is genetic testing. They turn your genetic information from complicated science, into easy to understand information all about your health, fitness and wellbeing. For example, do you ever read articles or magazines that are always telling you to have a low-fat diet, and then the next week it says have a low-carb diet? Well, the answers lie in your genetics! What we do is discover your unique genetic profile so you can understand interesting things like that about yourself, so you can live a healthier life. In terms of my job, I work with B2B clients. This means the products I make are for businesses. My job is probably one of the coolest there is, because I get to be an innovator, a designer, a builder, a tester. I create products for clients from the ground up, bringing ideas to life! That's why I'm the one who 'makes it happen', because I bring all the best people together, at precisely the right time, so we can build the perfect product for our client and their customers. "
How did I get here?
"At University I studied Maths. People are always shocked when I tell them, but they shouldn't be. I didn't choose the subject for any other reason than I liked solving puzzles, and that I had a higher chance of getting 100% in an exam than English (although that rarely happened!). I can tell you; Maths gets a lot more interesting when you leave school. I always liked Maths that meant something. Real-world Maths. Have you ever thought about the probability that you have the winning hand of cards? What about the science behind Sudoku? I didn't have anyone to inspire me to choose my subject, but that's why I want to inspire you. Once you start exploring deeper into a subject, you realise some things you've never thought about, are actually super interesting to you!"
The life I live
"I really love to play the piano. I find it very relaxing, especially as sometimes I feel like I want to take some time to myself without speaking to anyone! "
My typical day
"A typical day for me is quite difficult to describe. I know people say that all the time, but I promise it's true! I have multiple projects running at the same time, all in different stages. A couple of weeks ago I was in Indonesia with my client launching our product at some really cool events where I was lucky enough to be a speaker! (Never say no to speaking opportunities! It's how you get heard, no matter how painful it might be for you! People have done it before you, people will do it after you, so you can do it too!). Last week I was in Brussels at a conference creating new client relationships so we can start to progress and see how we could work together in future. This week I have been designing our digital web platform, working with developers to change the pictures, colours, design of a client who we have already started a project with. Next week I am running a workshop with another client to create a brand-new customer journey for a new product especially for them. And then the week after, I'm seeing the manufacturer who build our DNA kit boxes to see what material I prefer! So really, when I say it's varied, it really is! But I think you can see, that overall, my role is about creating new relationships, thinking up something cool and new to meet their needs, making it happen, and then launching it with them. "
My qualifications
"At GCSE I studied Maths, English (Lang. & Lit.), Sciences, French, Spanish, Art, Geography, IT. I then studied Maths at University of Exeter. I applied for some internships whilst I was at university and managed to get one at Deloitte. After this, I started a graduate scheme with Deloitte, where I was there for only a year, but based in Paris every week! I was then recommended to my current boss for a role at Prenetics, an opportunity I just couldn't turn down (and I would say I am quite risk averse as well!). I actually only really got this role because my previous employer was so impressed with my hard work (and really, it's just hard work! I'm no Einstein!). If I offer you any advice, it would be not to shut doors because of someone else's opinion. The life you choose, should be the life that you want, not what they want. You just have to be strong enough to realise that your thoughts and opinions matter the most to you. You can make anything happen if you put your mind to it. It really is, mind over matter!"
