About Eleanor...

Who am I?

"Communication is essential in my role, I need to make sure that I understand exactly what people are wanting/needing and make sure that I can clearly explain this to everyone else I work with. I will sometimes work on my own, and sometimes in a team. I therefore know how to self motivate, and also know how to motivate others."

What do I do?

"As a Business Analyst, I work with teams to deliver new software. This starts with understanding what the idea is/what the problem is that we are trying to solve. I then work out what 'chunks' of functionality we can deliver, and in what order we should deliver them. Generally, we do the smallest piece of work which brings benefit first. I think my favourite thing about my job is getting to see an idea which was once just in my head be turned into working software. That I get to see it helping people/see people enjoying it."

How did I get here?

"I think it is fair to say that I fell into my role as a Business Analyst. I'd always enjoyed problem solving and coming up with ideas - when I was studying D&T in sixth form I definitely enjoyed the ideas element most. I studied politics at university, and then did an MSc in Management. After graduating I entered a graduate scheme where I became a Business Analyst. I've got to work in a range of industries, initially in health care, and social care, and more recently in the gambling industry. "

The life I live

"I'm a keen cyclist, both commuting into work and going for longer bike rides with friends on a weekend. I've just completed Ride London, cycling 100 miles raising money for the Epilepsy Society. I also have a shiba inu, so enjoy going for walks with her (and my husband!)."

My typical day

"I don't have anything that I would deem a 'typical day' as it depends on where we are within a project/what my project is - this is one of the elements I really like about my job as no day is the same. If it is the beginning of the project I will spend a lot of time talking to people, understanding how things work, what doesn't work so well, how they think it could be better, and how we could go about achieving it. This can involve running workshops, visiting people to see how they work, and interviewing them/asking a lot of questions. When the project is being delivered my work has more structure - I generally work in 'sprints' which is where as a team we agree a set of work we are going to complete within a sprint (a specified period of time). During a sprint we have a number of ceremonies, which are around making sure we are working well, and also planning for the next sprint/celebrating what we have achieved. Every day starts with a 'stand-up' where all the team give an update on what we did yesterday, what we're planning on doing today, and if there are any blockers which may cause us problems. We have sprint elaboration (where we make sure we understand enough about what work is required), sprint planning (where we agree what we are going to work on next sprint), show & tell (where we show what we have developed in the sprint), and retrospectives (this is a meeting where we review the work we've done well, and what we could have done better - it is all around working towards constant improvement). "

My qualifications

"I have 4 AS-levels (Maths, D&T, Politics, & Classical Civilisations), 3 A-levels (D&T, Politics, & Classical Civilisations), a BA in Politics, and an MSc in Management."
