About Sarah...
Who am I?
"My quiz revealed I was a combination of Explorer, Coordinator and Quality Controller. I think Coordinator fits most strongly with what I know about myself and the way I work, and also about the type of job I do. As a project manager I have to ensure different people carry out different tasks to enable the project to succeed; we have to work as a team, and also I have to delegate jobs. The other two categories - Explorer and Quality Controller - fit really well too; a project manager is like the captain of a ship and has to lead the team as well as finding better more efficient ways of doing things, yet in line with company procedures!"
What do I do?
"I am responsible for the In service support of 6 radars on Italian and French Navy ships. This means that the radar system is already installed on the ship and is being used by the Navies. So if something breaks down and needs repairing, it needs to be returned to us and repaired. We also may supply spare items as required. As the system is fairly old (2002!), we also have to think about ways of dealing with obsolete parts. "
How did I get here?
"I studied Business Studies at University and was lucky enough to be taken on by BAE Systems (Marconi Radar as was) as a sponsored student which gave me an opportunity to work within different departments and learn different skills, before choosing where I wanted to work. I started off as a Buyer but felt my language and other skills were underutilised, so I moved into Project Management. From this I have expanded my role to include STEM Ambassador, Ethics Officer and Mental Health First Aider. "
The life I live
"I love running - I have done 10 marathons to date (I think that's enough!) - cycling and swimming. Keeping fit and healthy is my life really.....I am an avid reader, as are my friends, so we have set up a book club which meets up every couple of months and discusses a book we have read. "
My typical day
"There is no typical day as a Project Manager - it depends on the time of year (my customers all go on holiday in August), time of month - reporting deadlines, and what is generally going on within the project. There are usually a lot of emails to reply to, so I have to be organised! There are also a lot of meetings!I may be visiting a school to talk about STEM, I may have a telephone conference to discuss Ethics issues....."
My qualifications
"3 A levels - French, German and MathsBA Hons Business Studies at Sheffield Hallam UniversityPostgraduate Certificate in Management at Anglia Ruskin UniversityAPM Project Management Qualification"
