About Clara...

Who am I?

"The personality types absolutely fit. Part of my role is to help students improve, which is where my Trainer personality is very useful. I find that my Communicator is also helpful, as I work with many different people and need to figure out how to get information across to them in a way they will understand. I think my Influencer trait is great for when I am working on improving Diversity and Inclusion processes."

What do I do?

"I am responsible for the running of a university research lab and helping to supervise research students. I also do a lot of diversity work, outreach and sci comms. I enjoy doing the outreach and showing that a trans person can be a scientist. I like seeing the spark in the eye of someone realising that they can be a scientist for the first time, or that they can be a productive member of society: that trans people have real jobs and can contribute to society. I also love solving research questions by thinking outside the box. I love to find solutions. In the future, I would like to have a small research group, doing a little research. I would also love to have a TV show presenting science to the public. "

How did I get here?

"Before my PhD, I completed a degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering. My biggest inspiration is my mother first and foremost. I work with some great people in science and in Equality & Diversity. Trans media personalities have always inspired me (Fox Fisher amongst others). Also Dr Jess Wade who is a fantastic scientist and big believer in equity."

The life I live

"I enjoy climbing, painting miniature models, doing youth work (I run youth groups), listening to music (and DJing), writing blogs on various things (music, diversity). I play and run lots of dungeon and dragons games. Last year I DJ'd in a cow shed and the Pitt Rivers Museum and ran a rainbow story time for young children at a music festival. I also have a pug called Taylor."

My typical day

"I make sure equipment in the lab works and look to fix it if it is not. I discuss with students how to improve their experiments by using the equipment in different ways / looking at things differently. I may have a meeting for Health and Safety, or Equality and Diversity. I could be giving a talk on diversity, or at the very least answering emails for requests to do so. I also have outreach groups visit my lab, and I show them experiments."

My qualifications

"Pathways (please list all qualifications here)\tSecondary education (GCSE/O-Levels)Undergraduate degree (BSc, BA, etc.) BEng(hons) in Electronic and Electrical Engineering \tDoctorate (PhD) Materials Science / Engineering"
