About Jennifer...

Who am I?

"I think I suit my personality types quite well, although there is no one \"ideal\" person who shows what a Systems Engineer should look like! After taking the quiz, I found that I leant most towards the Manager, Influencer and Coordinator personality types. For the \"Manager\", I particularly think I match with the statements \"motivated\" and \"adaptable\" and they are both key qualities in my job. As for the \"Influencer\", a key part of what i do is in explaining complex issues so that people understand them, and thinking outside the box. For the \"Coordinator\" type, working with others is a key part of any engineering team, and organisation and reliability are key traits. "

What do I do?

"My role is varied from day-to-day. A systems engineer covers a whole range of responsibilities - from computer modelling and simulation of space vehicles to managing customer requirements for tanks. I like that I get to think creatively and come up with complex technical solutions, but also get to see the \"big picture\" of the project and why we're doing different tasks. A graduate systems engineering role starts at approx. £25,000/yr and apprenticeships (post A-level) at approx. £16,000/yr."

How did I get here?

"I have wanted to work in the space industry for a long time, but I wasn't sure in what role (and I'm still not 100% sure!). I did a range of A-levels but then went on to study Astrophysics at University. I took part in two different engineering summer internships and decided I enjoyed engineering and problem solving. I joined Lockheed Martin in 2018. "

The life I live

"I volunteer a lot with outreach and play a big role in our outreach and WiSTEM committee on site. We go out to schools to do activities, talks and try to get more people into STEM! I also enjoy martial arts and have done 4 different styles of martial arts including karate and MMA. "

My typical day

"This is a difficult question as my day varies quite a lot! I spend time at my computer replying to emails, doing modelling and simulation (e.g. looking at how a rocket heats up as it comes back into the Earth's atmosphere) and writing documents (paperwork is a key part of engineering so that people can replicate what you've done!). I sometimes help with bids for the company and researching new innovations. I could also spend time looking at requirements management and helping to explain how what we've created meets what the customer wants, or helping different \"subsystems\" in the project work together. "

My qualifications

"I have 4 A-levels (Maths, Further Maths, Physics and English) and 1 AS level (Classical Civilizations). After this, I went to the University of Southampton and studied a Masters Degree in Astrophysics. I joined the Lockheed Martin Engineering Graduate Scheme after doing two summer placements (Archangel Aerospace and Rolls-Royce)."
