About Beth...

Who am I?

"I love the variety in my job and helping people so that fits well with the ‘Explorer’ type. I am also a ‘Coordinator’ and ‘Quality Controller’ - I like having to be logical and organised in order to solve problems and I like to be able to close out issues. I like working with people too."

What do I do?

"I work within the manufacturing department leading projects, such as; new part introduction, installing new machines and implementing new manufacturing techniques. I work with multi national teams from all over the world and work with all our internal departments too. My background is in materials science and I worked in our materials laboratory for 8 years providing materials support for the production of new Gas Turbine engines. One of the most exciting things about my job has been travelling the world, visiting suppliers in India, Mexico, USA and Europe! India was the most unusual trip and seeing monkeys walking around the supplier’s site was a sight to see! Siemens are a great company to work for and have set progression plans for each role - if you work hard to achieve the requirements, there should be no barriers."

How did I get here?

"My Mum inspired me. She died when I was 17 so I wanted to make her proud in whatever I did. No one in her family had been to University before - me and my sister both managed to achieve this. I started as a Lab Technician in a forging company at 17 after doing a 1 year car mechanics course. I preferred a hands on approach to learning - I am a practical learner but also enjoy working and earning money! I worked in two aerospace manufacturing companies and worked my way up to Metallurgist and then more senior roles. I joined Siemens as a Principal Metallurgist in 2011, gained my MSc in materials for energy systems in 2018 and moved into the manufacturing department in 2019."

The life I live

"I like spending time with my family, shopping and sewing. In the future I would like to be in a more senior position within the company."

My typical day

"A typical day includes, checking email enquiries, attending meetings to discuss projects or new issues, checking parts on the shop floors and ensuring the production team have all they need to build engines. However, every day is different and having several areas (production, suppliers, meetings etc) to look after means it never gets boring!"

My qualifications

"Secondary education (GCSE/O-Levels)Vocational qualification (Diploma, Certificate, BTEC, NQV4 or equivalent)Materials for energy systems (MSc)BTEC ONC/HNC Metals Technology "
