Carolyn Moores
Professor of Structural Biology at Birkbeck College, London
Make sure you find a subject you love and stick at it. I thought about leaving science research to be a piano teacher - glad I didn't!
About Carolyn ...
Who am I?
"My types are Quality Controller, Coordinator and Trainer. A lot of the work I do relates to training people; from undergraduates who are new in the lab up to experienced postdoctoral researchers who are preparing to begin their own independent careers. Therefore, I think the ‘Trainer’ type is the best 'personality type' for me. I am empathic, organised, conscientious, fair-minded and sensible."
What do I do?
"I run a research group, supporting junior researchers with their work, publishing papers and writing grants. I contribute to department teaching and also to the administrative running of my department. I travel quite a lot, either to scientific conferences or to visit collaborators. I travel within the UK, to Europe and the USA very regularly, and in the last few years have also been to Australia and India. I love talking to other scientists about their discoveries and what they think about my team’s latest findings. My starting salary for my current role was about £35,000."
How did I get here?
"My parents were always very supportive. I always loved science at school and even though I didn't necessarily know what kind of scientist I wanted to be, I just kept going with the next natural step for my development as a scientist - from Undergrad, PhD student and Postdoctoral Researcher to independent research academic. My main subject was Biochemistry/Structural Biology. I loved being a postdoctoral researcher in the early phase of my career, when I was doing the experiments myself and finding out things that nobody else had seen before – the moments of scientific discovery are amazing! I really like my current job and hope I can stay doing something like this in the future - contributing to research and supporting the careers of her researchers."
The life I live
"In her spare time Carolyn sings in a chamber choir and likes gardening."
My typical day
"These days, I don’t have very much time to do experiments myself, but I puts a lot of time into making sure my team can do the research that they want to do. This involves quite a lot of writing - papers, grants and lots of emails! "
My qualifications
"Undergraduate Degree in Biochemistry, PhD Student in Structural Biology"
